180 Christopher Street, Manhattan

Permits have been filed for a 16-story residential building at 180 Christopher Street in the West Village neighborhood of Manhattan.  The corner parcel, which is located at the southeast corner of Christopher Street and West Street (aka the West Side Highway) sits directly across from the Hudson River Esplanade and within a stone’s throw of Pier 45 at Hudson River Park.

The proposed building will have 75 apartments and will more than double the size of the current six-story structure.  The permit reflects a new height of 181 feet and a gross floor area of 43,125 square feet.  The irregular-shaped lot measures 3,637 square feet and expands 91 feet along Christopher Street, 25 feet along West Street and 52 feet along the eastern side of the parcel.

180 Christopher Street, previously known as Bailey House, operated as a housing facility for people in need.

The building backs up to The Keller, a new boutique condominium at 150 Barrow Street.

The average size of an apartment at 180 Christopher Street, based on gross numbers, will be about 575 square feet.  It is unclear at this time whether the residential component will be a condominium or a rental property.  The building will not contain a garage.

Andrew Coamey of Housing Works is listed as the owner behind the application.  The architect for the project is listed as BIG Architecture.

The closest subway station is four minutes away at Christopher Street and 7th Avenue.  The station is serviced by the 1 train at all times and by the express 2 train late at night.  The PATH train, which provides for easy access to New Jersey and points north up to Penn Station, is also available at Christopher Street between Greenwich Street and Hudson Street.
