Property Description for 9 East 84th Street

This 25' wide Limestone mansion was built in 1901 by Warren and Wetmore, one of the most prolific architectural practices in America. Warren and Edmund Baylyes's Development Company built this Mansion for Ogden Mills Bishop and his family. The truly elegant facade recreated the typical composition of 19th century Parisian streetscape. Located off Fifth Avenue's prestigious Museum Mile stretch, this is a trophy residence spanning over 14,000 square feet that was...and will be again...a masterpiece.

The current owner painstakingly spent over six years gut renovating this sensational home. It was designed by Gabellini Sheppard and built to a standard of quality and craftsmanship that distinguishes 9 E 84th as a work of art. After it was completed in 2015, 9 E 84th was selected by the AAP (American Architectural Prize) jury as the winner of Interior Design / Residential for 2017.

Spanning 7 floors, this mansion features 6-8 bedrooms, 6 full bathrooms, 4 powder rooms, 15' soaring ceilings and arguably one of the most exquisite staircases that rivals the one in the Guggenheim. There is a large roof skylight, a rear terrace skylight and a light well that illuminates all levels of the house with brilliant natural light all day long. This is complemented further by the oversized windows on both the front and rear facades. Some of the amenities and features include a gym/yoga studio, basketball court, a 53' pool with separate hot tub as well as a salon with steam-shower, bathroom and changing room. The walk-able glass patio in the backyard delivers bright natural light into the pool and basketball court thru the light well. Additionally, there is a high speed elevator built with a seamless Corian interior that services every floor and the house includes every modern system one would want and includes multi-zone HVAC with added radiant heat under the stone floors, water filtration, Lutron lighting, electric shades & security system. All of the house systems are integrated and controlled by the Crestron/Siedle system. There is also the maids quarters featuring en-suite bathroom, separate work space and private entrance.

As you enter the house's first level, the marvelous entry foyer will captivate...you will be greeted by the truly extraordinary staircase that was conceived to create a dramatic yet serene entryway and it is made of stainless-steel, marble and glass. There is a mud-room that is the size of a modest sized bedroom with floor to ceiling custom Corian mill-work. Adjacent to the far side of the foyer is the eat-in kitchen which leads out to the north facing backyard and garden. There is also a powder room on this level.

Level 2 is the grand parlor floor that features 2 fireplaces (one wood-burning / one gas) the living room, dining room, butler's pantry, media room with theater-style screen that retracts into the ceiling when not in use. There is also a powder room.

On level 3 you will find the master suite that includes a large separate library/sitting room/office, the spa-like master bath, the main chamber with wood burning fireplace and enormous his and hers closets.

Level 4 is the main children's floor with 4 bedrooms, 2 full bathrooms and a full laundry room

Level 5 features the music & craft room and adjacent full bathroom, another bedroom with en-suite bath and a separate study-office.

The roof has N-S-E-W views and is another outdoor retreat.

In between the Level 1 and the Lower level 1 is the maid’s quarters that is fully contained, efficient and comfortable with its own entrance from the street.

On lower level 1 you will find the basketball court, the gym/yoga studio and a powder room. One flight down to lower level 2 is the salon that includes the spa-bathroom, steam shower & changing room. From the salon, you then pass thru the glass doors and you are greeted by the pool which is simply Stunning...

IMPORTANT NOTE...
...2 years ago, the house just to the west (7 E 84th St) had a fire and burned to the ground and caused interior damage (primarily smoke damage) to 9 E 84th. The damages have been remediated thru a rigorous and highly supervised process, and this was completed a little over a year ago. During this process, many of the fixtures in 9 E 84th St had to be removed in whole or in part. The house at this point will need the new owner to re-install "all of the fun things", meaning many of the finishes as it relates to the kitchen, some flooring, tiles, wall finishes etc. The house's structure and structural elements were not affected. This is truly a special situation with an extraordinary number of options making 9 E 84th St a must see...

Upper East Side | Manhattan

Quick Profile

Exuding a cosmopolitan, refined air that is reminiscent of Paris or other European cities, the Upper East Side (the UES, to local cognoscenti) has a reputation as being a bastion of wealth and privilege. Even though it was built by American “royalty” families like the Vanderbilts, Roosevelts, Kennedys, Carnegies and Rockefellers, whose elaborate mansions once anchored Fifth Avenue, there are affordable housing options throughout the neighborhood. The further east you move, away from Central Park and the more commercial avenues, the more likely you are to find quiet, tree-lined streets with historic townhouses and brownstones. Keep your eye out for reasonably priced apartments in pre-war low-rise and even a few high-rise buildings.

With abundant, beautifully landscaped green spaces, including the oasis of Central Park acting like a backyard, the area is quiet and lushly green. You can relax and unwind in John Jay Park, Carl Schurz Park or take a stroll along the East River Promenade. The whole neighborhood seems isolated from the workaday chaos of the city at large. Add to that the history of the neighborhood and the abundance of cultural institutions, and you have a uniquely welcoming neighborhood.

Known for its abundance of high-end retail shopping, especially on Madison Avenue, the Upper East Side is host to the Barneys New York flagship department store. Here you can find upscale goods, fashion and home decor items. You will also find the edgy runway-inspired Alexander McQueen collections. If you are dying to treat your feet to red-soled opulence, be sure to visit the Christian Louboutin boutique. These are only a small sampling of this high-end shopper’s paradise that features everything from designer boutiques that offer the ultimate in haute couture to resale shops where you can find last season’s best on sale at hefty discounts .

There are many unique dining experiences, from fine dining to the casual bite-on-the-go, awaiting you in the UES. Sushi is going through a renaissance in the city, and the best omakase-style sushi can be found at Sasabune on E 73rd Street. Omakase sushi means that you leave the choice of ingredients, preparation method and presentation to the chef. Elegant French cuisine can be experienced at JoJo, E 64th Street, housed in gorgeous townhouse. Just for fun, visit the Lexington Candy Shop on Lexington Avenue, to get a taste of an old-fashioned soda fountain.
