Property Description for 204 West 140th Street, 5-D

As you enter this home, you receive the sensation of a bright, loft-like space at a length of 35 feet. There are 9 large windows and a terrace door in this 900 sq ft home. It looks above the historical Strivers Row built by McKim, Meade & White with open landmarked views. Features of this home include a very large, eat-in kitchen, Poggenpohl cabinetry, four Bosch appliances and lots of Silestone countertop space. Two kitchen walls are finished in Italian subway tile from countertop to ceiling, including the window sills. The bedroom is large, the light is beautiful and all walls painted with Benjamin Moore Aura. Other features include radiant heat tile flooring in the bathroom, washer/dryer concealed behind French doors, an eclectic mix of vintage and modern lighting, lovely large plank wood floors and Smith & Noble custom wooden blinds. Homes in this building with this same floorplan have chosen to add a second bedroom via sliding opaque doors in the living area with great success. There is a virtual doorman to receive packages in the lobby and two bike storage rooms are located in the basement. 204 West 140th Street 5D is just 3 blocks from St Nicholas Park and 6 blocks to the 2, 3, B and C trains. This West Harlem neighborhood has major jazz history; Thelonious Monk practiced his piano in a brownstone next door and Sammy Davis Jr lived at the other end of this block. The view from the terrace is south facing, lots of sky, a huge tree, perfect for a green thumb; peace and quiet abound. Around the corner are the restaurants Pointy Bistro, Ruby’s Vintage and Row House and a bar named Alibi. Shakti-Barre yoga and barre studio & Harlem Cycle are a few blocks down Adam Clayton Powell Boulevard.

Harlem | Manhattan

Quick Profile

The neighborhood called West Harlem by the locals is known as Manhattanville to neighborhood newcomers. The area is culturally diverse and might be considered a microcosm of the city as a whole.

Columbia University has recently expanded into the area, which is attracting student residents from all over the world. Together with students from the City College of New York and young professionals fleeing higher prices in other neighborhoods, this influx of younger residents has brought with it more restaurants and bars on W 125th Street to serve this clientele. There are also new ventures, like a rock-climbing gym, to cater to the interests of these students and young professionals. At the same time, there are many small, family-owned shops and restaurants that have been anchors of the neighborhood for multiple generations.

The area has been through a housing upgrade, as older properties have been renovated and abandoned properties have been razed to make room for new development. There are still reasonably priced apartments available. Young professionals are finding that there is a certain cachet to living in West Harlem. It provides a convenient commute to the city and all of its amenities, while providing a sense of escape at the end of a long work day.

While rentals are popular with the student population, the young professionals are delighted to find pre-war brownstones, pre-war co-ops (including some income-capped HDFCs for lower- and middle-income buyers), and post-war condos that they can afford, although prices are rising. Some new low-rise developments, sporting virtual doormen and desired amenities, are cropping up.
