Property Description for 222 Madison Street

This hidden gem masquerading as a garage is an amazing single family home. Park your car in the private garage and enter into a totally outfitted modern loft with multiple sleeping areas, 2 full bathrooms, an atrium and a terrace, two skylights and striking ceiling height while feeling the comfort and warmth of radiant heat thru the cured cement floors. On the main level, which is completely open, the chef's kitchen has a DCS professional 36" range/oven that vents to the outside, a Bosch dishwasher, a Carrara marble island, stainless steel counters and cabinets, and a pantry - the perfect combination of industrial chic and functional beauty. Leaving the kitchen but before you step down into the generous living room there is a library/reading area with a Dutch designed music storage system, as well as room for a dining table. From the living room you can look out at a Zen-like atrium. There is a full bath on the main level with a "talavera" hand-painted sink, as well as a real laundry room. Up a half flight of stairs is the mezzanine outfitted as a wonderful work space and "command center" where the multi-camera high-tech security system can be monitored. On either side of the mezzanine and up a few more stairs are two living/sleeping areas to be used as you wish. On one side is what is now the master bedroom which has a private terrace and a wonderful full bath with separate soaking tub, walk-in shower, and two "talavera" hand-painted sinks. The master bedroom has a large walk-in closet and room for a king-size bed, reading chairs, dressers and wardrobe. The loft on the opposite side is an open space now used as a large play room with bunk beds tucked quietly away and another over sized storage closet and a clothes closet. Everywhere you look there are more storage spaces. Throughout there has been attention to energy efficiency, including "on demand" hot water and radiant floor heating, central air, and a sound system that can be individually controlled from space to space.

Bedford Stuyvesant | Brooklyn

Quick Profile

Known for its historic brownstones and tight-knit enclave, Bed-Stuy has increasingly left behind its early reputation for being a “bedroom community” and transcended into a highly desirable neighborhood.

Distinct for its aesthetic, it is populated with ornate buildings characterized by cornices, friezes, finials, fluting and other marks of classic architecture. Built up during the period from 1870 to 1900, its historic district runs to the north of Jefferson Avenue, to the east of Malcolm X Boulevard and to the west of Tompkins Avenue.

At one point known as “Brooklyn’s Little Harlem,” the shape of the area has shifted toward attracting a wider demographic of people thanks to the influx of bars, restaurants, antique furniture stores and vintage boutiques. More police enforcement paired with the decline of the crack epidemic at the beginning of the 2000s also opened the door for increased development, as well as the occupation of formerly abandoned buildings and spaces.
