Property Description for 152 Elizabeth Street, PH

The Penthouse at 152 Elizabeth – a masterwork for Pritzker Prize Laureate Tadao Ando and renowned interior architect Michael Gabellini – crowns what many in the world of architecture and design agree to be the most significant boutique residential development in New York City to date. Rising gracefully from the structure’s poured-in-place concrete, grey metal and glass base, the Penthouse is deeply crafted and evokes a stellar level of beauty, warmth and riveting detail. Ideally situated in vibrant Nolita, the building stands as Ando’s first residential work outside of Asia. The Penthouse spans 5,603 interior square feet across two levels and 3,240 square feet of exterior space including a fully outfitted rooftop terrace.

Seamlessly connected from the principal living and entertainment floor to the rooftop, the custom Gabellini Sheppard-designed stairway is encased in curvilinear glass and satin stainless steel that appears to float atop its Pietra Cardosa stone pavers. This high acuity for the senses avails itself throughout the entire residence, with multiple surfaces treated in a special manner. Framed by 14 – 20” varying width Dinesen HeartOak flooring and architectural walls that conceal ventilation systems, each space manifests as a distinct volume while harmoniously leading to the next.

The tailor-made kitchen by Milan-based firm Minimal boasts honed Fango marble counters, a sliding island countertop, Italian Eucalyptus wood cabinetry, and a fully integrated Gaggenau appliance package. Adjacent to the kitchen are generously proportioned dining and great rooms, featuring a gas-burning fireplace surrounded by Pietra Cardosa stone and an artisan plaster wall. Following the theme of procession and interplay with nature, enjoy a harmoniously linked 45’ planted terrace adorned with Ando’s signature reflecting pools and water walls.

Discreetly tucked on the upper floor, find four perfectly scaled bedroom suites and a media room. Bianco Sivec marble, glacier white Corian vanities and CEA Design wall-mounted faucets clad each bath, while the master suite enjoys an expansive walk-in closet and dressing room along with a private balcony paved in sandblasted granite.

The final component of the Penthouse, a sanctuary among roof terraces, offers freestanding landscaped planters, an Ando designed granite fireplace and reflecting pool, custom carved granite soaking tub, outdoor shower and kitchen. Experience sweeping views of downtown Manhattan, the Williamsburg Bridge and beyond.

Amenities include a full-time doorman; automated parking and storage units available for purchase.

Little Italy | Manhattan

Quick Profile

It’s fitting that the neighborhood’s name is Little Italy because It’s been getting smaller for decades. The Italian immigrants that flooded New York City and built the vibrant ethnic enclave in the 1860s and 1880s eventually left for greener pastures, assimilating into other parts of the city or suburbs. The disappearance of Little Italy is a sad story as far as neighborhoods go, but it’s one that should be told.

Little Italy once spanned 50 square blocks and represented the biggest population of Italian immigrants in America. But in recent years, it’s been squeezed by the growth of Chinatown and SoHo and muscled from the rebranding of other neighborhoods like NoHo and NoLIta. In fact, NoLita was the culprit that cut the neighborhood in two. Little Italy’s boundaries may vary depending upon who you ask. Today it’s down to just a few blocks along Mulberry Street.

One of the best ways to experience Little Italy is through its food. Take your pick from mom-and-pop markets, meat and cheese shops, or authentic sit-down restaurants that offer the very best in Italian cuisine.

Every September (since 1926), the neighborhood hosts the Feast of San Gennaro, which celebrates the patron Saint of Naples Italy. 11 days of food, colorful parades, music performances, and more food. The aroma of zeppole and grilled sausage can be smelt for blocks. Try planning your visit around this festive time. It’s well worth it.
