Reviews

"HE WAS AWESOME. We totally felt like John had our best interests at heart, and was there for it all. So, so happy! He was TOTALLY accommodating to our weird schedules/time frame. We can't say enough good things about the experience. Thank you!"
~Amanda B., Washington Heights

"Nothing but good things to say about this place. John Thyen helped me and my wife make searching for an apartment and renting it a wonderful experience- despite making the move from the Midwest and not being able to be in the city looking for more than a few days. He was full of information and went the extra mile to help us if he could. He came highly recommended and I promise he didn't disappoint."
~Lincoln S., Central Harlem

"Looking for a new apartment was, for me, the culmination of 2 years of incredibly stressful life events. I didn't think heavily about choosing a broker, but I knew the neighborhood I needed to move to. From our first contact, John Thyen was incredibly helpful and knowledgeable about the process and the Hamilton Heights area. Once I told him what I was looking for, he homed in on the exact rental to meet my needs. I didn't have to visit every potential apartment, because he listened to me the first time, and knew what to ask me.
Working with him was great-- pleasurable, professional, and painless. I'm all moved in now, and so glad I picked him to work with. I don't think looking for an apartment in NYC is awesome, but he truly made it so much easier than I was expecting."
~Isobeau T., Hamilton Heights

"My husband and I went into the NYC apartment hunting wide-eyed and not quite sure what to expect. It was such a relief to work with John as he helped answer our many questions, was good at asking questions to help us determine which apartments we liked and why, and he was very quick at replying to any additional follow up questions we had via email.
John was realistic and provided options for us while respecting our autonomy to make decisions. Our apartment hunting process went much more smoothly than we anticipated and we would definitely recommend John to anyone out there who has experience apartment hunting in NYC or is new to the game. Plus, John was easy to talk to and personable. We were so lucky to connect with John and greatly appreciated working with him during our apartment hunting experience!"
~Sheila E., Central Harlem

"John Thyen found us our dream apartment in one day! I don't know what we would have done without him. He's the best."
~Elliot B., Hamilton Heights

Quick Profile

The neighborhood called West Harlem by the locals is known as Manhattanville to neighborhood newcomers. The area is culturally diverse and might be considered a microcosm of the city as a whole.

Columbia University has recently expanded into the area, which is attracting student residents from all over the world. Together with students from the City College of New York and young professionals fleeing higher prices in other neighborhoods, this influx of younger residents has brought with it more restaurants and bars on W 125th Street to serve this clientele. There are also new ventures, like a rock-climbing gym, to cater to the interests of these students and young professionals. At the same time, there are many small, family-owned shops and restaurants that have been anchors of the neighborhood for multiple generations.

The area has been through a housing upgrade, as older properties have been renovated and abandoned properties have been razed to make room for new development. There are still reasonably priced apartments available. Young professionals are finding that there is a certain cachet to living in West Harlem. It provides a convenient commute to the city and all of its amenities, while providing a sense of escape at the end of a long work day.

While rentals are popular with the student population, the young professionals are delighted to find pre-war brownstones, pre-war co-ops (including some income-capped HDFCs for lower- and middle-income buyers), and post-war condos that they can afford, although prices are rising. Some new low-rise developments, sporting virtual doormen and desired amenities, are cropping up.
