Property Description for 264 Cumberland Street, 3

We proudly offer a one bedroom, first floor, multi-level apartment in the coveted Sanctuary Condominium in historic Ft.Greene. This newly designed building from famed architects the Sacarano Group boasts an expansive open floor plan, a gourmet kitchen with Carrara marble counter tops, a master bath with Jacuzzi soaking tub, floor to ceiling windows, and a private patio.

The main level is gracious and allows seating for five at the beautiful counter. Hardwood floors sparkle in the light that streams from the expansive windows. The terrazzo tile in the large and well appointed main floor bath is stunning. A wide staircase that leads to the master level is graced at the landing by massive built in book shelves and under staircase storage. The smaller room is perfect for an office/recreation room, a nursery, or guest room. The laundry room is appointed with Bosch washer and dryer.

The master bedroom area boasts a large walk in closet, a private half bathroom, and a computer/office nook. Exit the master bedroom through the sliding glass door to your private outdoor space.

The low monthlies, central air conditioning, video intercom on both floors, private entrance on both floors, and perfect location make this the highly desired living experience you are looking for.

The two attached four-story buildings have been designed to include 13 apartments, and each one utilizes an organic aspect of the original church, from the beamed ceilings throughout to the arches in the main sanctuary. A rooftop extension was designed to maximize the property's potential while maintaining a discrete profile from the street.

Originally built as Our Lady of Pillar Catholic Church in 1915, the church and attached rectory buildings have housed various churches over the years and were eventually abandoned by the last congregation in 2003. With the advent of a new use and purpose, the condominiums were completed with a refurbished façade that respects and maintains the quality of this landmark. With its new use, the building is being utilized again in a vital and dynamic way and the community is further reinforced.

The main design concept was twofold: first, to create the conversion of a spiritual place into modern residences with full respect to their functional utilitarian needs; and second, to preserve the unique aura of the space and its surroundings. Together, these two concepts enable the new use of the old structure to become an organic part of the streetscape. During the course of the alteration, new light frame partitions and walls were introduced without compromising the original basilica structure, which remains the core of the entire building. In the lower floors, the former sanctuary space manifests itself in the form of exposed heavy timber beams. On the upper floors, original gothic roof rafters and braces are fully exposed, which, in combination with the rose stained glass windows, communicate each apartment's unique grandeur.

An abandoned church has a stultifying affect on its street, as well as the overall fabric of the neighborhood. The adaptive re-use of this building represents a substantial renewal of the community, encouraging future projects to respect existing buildings even when the option to tear down and rebuild exists. Creating a residential sanctuary in a former religious domain has provided a beautiful addition to its immediate area in historic Fort Greene.

Dining and nightlife abound. Enjoy spots like Emily, La Rina Pastavicio and Vino, Olea, Karasu and more. Enjoy historic Ft. Greene in this peaceful one of kind sanctuary space.

Fort Greene | Brooklyn

Quick Profile

Conveniently situated just north of the beautiful and lush Prospect Park, Fort Greene is rich with history. Representative of an aesthetic that Brooklyn is often associated with--the brownstone and row house architecture being an institution of the community--Fort Greene is decidedly singular in visual style. As part of the National Register of Historic Places, this South Brooklyn neighborhood offers unique charm and plenty of character.

Beginning with its early military-oriented inception (the territory was central to the Battle of Long Island), Fort Greene has always been recognized for its spaciousness and a sense of openness. Filled with nature and greenery, it is also home to its very own eponymously named park in addition to being in close proximity to Brooklyn’s largest recreational area, Prospect Park (containing the beloved Prospect Park Zoo within it).

Many residents come from different socioeconomic backgrounds and commute to their workplaces in Manhattan, while keeping Fort Greene as their separate haven. The diversity of the area has proven to be one of the few examples of a Brooklyn neighborhood maintaining its roots in part thanks to its protected status.
