Property Description for 425 East 58th Street, 34-D

Elegant, glamorous, and rich with views of the East River and the Manhattan Skyline, this recently renovated 2-bedroom (convertible to a third), 2-and-a-half bathroom apartment is the perfect blend of regal style and postwar luxury.

The Foyer—whose walls are lined with imported mahogany—leads into an entrance Gallery with a built-in wet bar and inlaid marble mosaic floors and serves as the entry point to a polished Power Room with a French ormolu cabinet and an inlaid wood vanity. The Gallery opens into a grand, 27-ft long Living Room with a herringbone hardwood floor, an illuminated dome ceiling, paneled walls with recessed lighting, and access to a comfortably-sized south-facing terrace with views of the river, Four Freedom’s Park on Roosevelt Island, and two of New York’s most iconic monuments in the Chrysler and Empire State Buildings. On the opposite side of the Gallery sits a stately, paneled Library/Dining Room with an alcove ceiling and a large, north-facing window. Adjacent to that is a spacious eat-in Kitchen featuring a farmhouse sink, easy-to-clean tile floors, northern views, and plenty of counter and storage space. There is also access to the home’s Laundry closet—complete with a washer/dryer.

Situated in the northeast corner of the apartment, the Master Bedroom has river views, a large, customized walk-in closet—with its own dressing area—and a dignified ensuite bathroom finished with mahogany cabinetry, a whirlpool tub, a bidet, and a walk-in shower with a beautiful etched glass Erte-Style shower door. Nestled in the southeast corner the home, the second bedroom has its own custom walk-in closet, a built-in safe, and a striking ensuite bathroom with marble floors and tumbled stone tiles. The entire apartment is wired for surround-sound with Bose in-wall speakers and comes with zone controlled central heat and air.

The Sovereign, designed by Emery Roth and Sons, is a sophisticated postwar co-op in the residential neighborhood of Sutton Place. It features an International Style lobby with soaring ceilings, hand blown 1950’s Venini chandeliers, Rosewood panels, and travertine marble floors. Amenities include a lobby level gym, 24-hour valet garage and first-class luxury service from a well trained staff. Pets ok and seller paying $6,600 at closing towards the maintenance for the next 2 years.

Sutton Place | Manhattan

Quick Profile

Sutton Place is usually described with favorable words like charming, cozy, great neighborhood, hidden gem, sanctuary, or even small village inside a big city. Those descriptions aren’t from real estate folks either, they’re from the people that live and work there, so it must be true.

The quiet and upscale neighborhood is more like an enclave. It’s bounded by East 53rd Street to the south, East 59th Street to the North, First Avenue to the west, and the East River to the east. Most residents will tell you that everything you’ll ever need is located in the neighborhood. When it’s time to venture out into the cityscape, Sutton Place is within easy reach to Midtown and cultural attractions like the Museum of Modern Art, Rockefeller Center, Central Park and other iconic sites.

Manhattan has always had notable celebrity residents. But for unknown reasons, Sutton Place has had more than its share of superstars over the years. Some of the more iconic celebs include: Marilyn Monroe and Arthur Miller, Freddie Mercury, Sigourney Weaver, Joan Crawford, Michael Jackson and sister Latoya (Just for one summer).

Sutton Place is named after Effingham B. Sutton, a shipping merchant and entrepreneur. After hitting it big in the California gold rush, Sutton built brownstones along East 57th and East 58th streets with aspirations of making the section more residential. Poverty and crime dashed his dreams. The street gangs that hung out along the dead-ends and cul-de-sacs added to the neighborhood’s decay. Sutton was about to give up on his development endeavors but the Vanderbilt’s and the Morgan’s showed up in the 1920s and transformed the neighborhood. It soon became a wealthy enclave.
