Property Description for 24 West 55th Street, 8-B

Form and Function. This captivating two-bedroom, two-bathroom home was commissioned by the Rockefellers in 1936 to set a precedent of integrity and simple elegance in residential design. The living room which spans 21 feet is anchored by a clean-lined fireplace, all framed by a dramatic near floor-to-ceiling steel casement window. Off the living room, the dining room with its over 6-foot cylindrical bow window inspires dining in. The entire home has been meticulously renovated to restore the original historic details that come with this important International Modernist landmarked building. The windowed Chef's kitchen with it’s top-of-the-line stainless steel appliances including a Sub-Zero refrigerator retains a balance of old and new with all 1936 cabinetry carefully custom lacquered, and modern additions like a stainless steel glassware cabinet and Danby marble topped counters. The historic integrity of the home shines with herringbone oak floors, flush built-in bookshelves, burnished steel entry door, newly chromed bath fittings affixed to vintage porcelain fixtures and tiles...right down to the Bauhaus door knobs and light switches. The tone of the home is augmented by designer recessed lighting thoughtfully positioned for curated art displays with closet additions and custom closet fittings completing this pristine home. The site of 24 West 55th Street was John D. Rockefeller’s townhouse and essentially his renovation project that took on a new life and helped define an architectural period. This prewar building known as the Rockefeller Apartments, designed by Wallace K. Harrison, offers 24-hour doorman, central laundry, resident superintendent, and a picturesque common garden adjoining the two towers. With the Museum of Modern Art as a distinguished neighbor, one can enjoy the MOMA sculpture garden like it was your own, or be the first to enjoy the many exhibits and screenings. From interior features to location, this home offers a curated New York life, with the historic architecture of the Seagram Building and Lever House on 53rd Street, Central Park to the north, and Columbus Circle to the west and Rockefeller Center and Broadway shows close by. With numerous transportation options either side of your block, The Rockefeller Apartments are poised to benefit from the continued evolution of this compelling central location.

Midtown West | Manhattan

Quick Profile

People, yellow cabs, bright lights, big crowds, 24-hour eateries and just about every type of store imaginable. it’s a frenetic buzz that only a few places on the globe can offer. And that’s just one part of it. Midtown West is the birthplace of hustle and bustle and it’s bordered by 42nd to the south, 59th Street to the north, 8th Avenue to the west, and 5th Avenue to the east.

Midtown West is not as residential as other neighborhoods in Manhattan. The bustling part of Midtown West is 42nd Street between Times Square and 8th Avenues where the retail and office space, theatres, and attractions are. No matter what time of day it is, you'll always find activity there.

Residential buildings lay near the western end of Midtown West beginning around 8th Avenue.

Location, location, location. Of all the neighborhoods and enclaves of Manhattan, Midtown West is perhaps the most commutable place to live, visit, or work. It contains one of the highest concentrations of subway lines in the Big Apple. A, C, E, N, Q, R, 1, 2, 3, and the 7 train. The transit system feeds the streets with commuters from everywhere. The Port Authority Bus Terminal and nearby Penn Station adds to the number of people that flood Midtown on any given day.

It’s one of the easiest places in all of Manhattan to navigate because it’s a true grid. Uptown, street numbers go up. Downtown, street numbers go down. It’s the same concept from east to west. You really can’t get lost in Midtown West.
