Property Description for 290 West 137th Street

Sitting on one of Harlem's most beautiful, tree-lined streets in the Strivers Row neighborhood, this 5-story, 4613 square foot townhouse consists of an owner's quadraplex AND a separate one-bedroom garden apartment for the owner's use as an au-pair, in-law, work/office space, Airbnb or rental unit.

The owner's quadraplex offers 5 bedrooms, 4 full baths and 2 half baths. Every detail was carefully thought through and selected in this renovated, up-to-date home, graced by gleaming hardwood floors and 7 fireplaces.

Entertain in grand style, welcoming your guests into the elegant 74' long parlor floor featuring a spacious formal dining room with period wainscoting and crown moldings, an eat-in kitchen with both southern and western exposures, stainless steel appliances, granite countertop, and a convenient powder room.

A graceful stairway leads up to a luxurious, full-floor master suite, complimented by an en-suite spa-like bathroom with an oversized-soaking tub and separate glass shower with overhead rainfall fixture and multiple body sprays, a separate dressing area, generous closets and storage space, and a private terrace. This master suite is the ultimate retreat, boasting a sun-filled sitting room/office with a wall of windows looking out onto the tree-lined street below.

The next floor up consists of one large bedroom with an en-suite bath, perfect for guests, and two additional bedrooms, serviced by the hall bathroom, and a laundry room.

The top floor, sundrenched by two skylights, features an entertainment room, a wet bar, and a terrace. Enjoy city views and star-gazing from the large terrace, perfect for outdoor entertaining. A sunny bedroom and spacious bathroom at the north end of the floor complete this must-see quadraplex. In addition, this top floor presents the tantalizing option to the new owner of creating a wonderful garden or penthouse and deck "one flight" up on the roof.

And --- FINALLY--- in addition to all of the above, there's more! On the lowest level of this townhouse is a separately accessed, self-contained, garden-level apartment with a garden view from the bedroom.

290 West 137th Street, renovated to a high standard of excellence on each of its 5 floors, comes at a price per square foot of just below $791, a price comparable to, or significantly less than, its similarly urbane and sophisticated Harlem neighbors. It is conveniently located near subways, shopping, restaurants, and parks. Come and enjoy the incredibly diverse, historically rich, highly energized and constantly evolving community of Harlem.

Harlem | Manhattan

Quick Profile

The neighborhood called West Harlem by the locals is known as Manhattanville to neighborhood newcomers. The area is culturally diverse and might be considered a microcosm of the city as a whole.

Columbia University has recently expanded into the area, which is attracting student residents from all over the world. Together with students from the City College of New York and young professionals fleeing higher prices in other neighborhoods, this influx of younger residents has brought with it more restaurants and bars on W 125th Street to serve this clientele. There are also new ventures, like a rock-climbing gym, to cater to the interests of these students and young professionals. At the same time, there are many small, family-owned shops and restaurants that have been anchors of the neighborhood for multiple generations.

The area has been through a housing upgrade, as older properties have been renovated and abandoned properties have been razed to make room for new development. There are still reasonably priced apartments available. Young professionals are finding that there is a certain cachet to living in West Harlem. It provides a convenient commute to the city and all of its amenities, while providing a sense of escape at the end of a long work day.

While rentals are popular with the student population, the young professionals are delighted to find pre-war brownstones, pre-war co-ops (including some income-capped HDFCs for lower- and middle-income buyers), and post-war condos that they can afford, although prices are rising. Some new low-rise developments, sporting virtual doormen and desired amenities, are cropping up.
