Property Description for 1 Main Street, 4-A

NEW TO MARKET

Now available in Dumbo's iconic Clocktower, the building that started it all: a huge loft, with a coveted western exposure offering expansive views of the Brooklyn Bridge and the East river over landmarked buildings and the Brooklyn Bridge park. This oversized 2198 SF (approx.) 2 bedroom / 2.5 bath loft has a huge home office suitable for use as a third bedroom. It offers high ceilings, abundant light, incredible storage and a spacious floor plan perfect for comfortable living and entertaining. This property has been with the same owner for twelve years, giving the new owner an opportunity to put their own mark on a great loft. Details include oak floors, huge laundry room with storage, 11+ foot ceilings with exposed beams, and a large chef's kitchen that opens to the great room. This dramatic loft is smartly priced for today's market. Residents of the Clocktower enjoy a full time doorman, an attentive staff, a fitness room and roof deck. Built in 1917 in the Industrial Neo-Classical style by the architect William Higginson, One Main was at that time the tallest reinforced concrete building in the world. Now landmarked, this spectacular building and its iconic clock tower has become a symbol of Dumbo, and of the neighborhoods emergence as a coveted address for New Yorkers in the know. You are surrounded by cobblestone streets, art galleries and cafes, the waterfront with an award winning playground, and the stunning new Brooklyn Bridge Park. Next up for the park: a restored carousel in a new building designed by architect Jean Nouvel. One stop to Manhattan on the A,C, and F.

Dumbo | Brooklyn

Quick Profile

DUMBO, which is an acronym for Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass, used to be a lively industrial and manufacturing zone, full of large factories and warehouses. These buildings have now been converted into expansive lofts, theaters, galleries, and office spaces for start-up companies. These larger residential spaces are attractive to families and creative artists and writers who need space to dream and create.

DUMBO was named in 1978 as a sort of reverse marketing ploy to try to keep people from swarming into the area, attracted by the quaint tree-lined streets, elegant historic brownstones, large lofts, and views of Lower Manhattan. It was felt that this influx of people would change the nature of the neighborhood. It was hoped that by giving the area a ridiculous name, nobody would want to live there.

Many of the neighborhood’s bars, hotels, and restaurants capitalize on the stunning waterfront views and the Manhattan skyline in the background. Interesting and fun cultural events are held under and around the Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges that connect DUMBO to Manhattan. One of these is the annual Oktoberfest.

With beautiful vignettes of the Manhattan and Brooklyn Bridges being framed around every corner, DUMBO provides residents and tourists with charming, and often surprising, views. Because the neighborhood is eminently walkable and filled with unique shops, it feels like a small town on the edge of a major urban waterfront. Once people move to DUMBO, they tend to stay and become involved in the community.
