Property Description for 139 West 136th Street

Completely renovated from the roof to the cellar, featuring a large owner's apartment on the top three floors as well as a nicely appointed rental duplex on the first and cellar levels. Walking into the upstairs apartment, the visitor finds period woodworking throughout, along with a massive gourmet kitchen, which includes a wall oven, oversized refrigerator/freezer, wine cooler, and other appliances all from high end manufacturers. The kitchen is finished with dark wood cabinets, stone counters, one of many beautiful original fireplaces in the property and a sliding glass door to a private roof deck, which allows a fantastic party space or second dining area in mild weather. Passing by the powder room, also on this level is a living room, with closet, which could be used as an extra bedroom or home office. The second floor of this apartment has two unique bedrooms, which each has its own decorative fireplace as well as a vintage "shaving closet", which has been renovated with a new sink and modern treatments for storage. A full bathroom separates these bedrooms. The third floor is home to the master suite, which includes an almost loft like bedroom, washer/dryer room, a windowed walk-in closet and a large bathroom suite with double vanity, sower and deep soaking tub. This level also has a private staircase, which leads to the roof deck. The garden "rental" apartment is an impressive home itself, with an oversized kitchen including wine cooler, full sized appliances, ample cabinets and marble counters. This great room has a powder room and is full of period details including two decorative fireplaces. The bedroom has its own en suite bathroom as well as access to the garden, which is given over to this unit. The finished cellar level boasts its own street entrance as well as a full bathroom and a separate washer/dryer room. The entire house has been updated, with new roofing, electricals, central cooling/heating, plumbing and security. Harlem | Manhattan

Quick Profile

The neighborhood called West Harlem by the locals is known as Manhattanville to neighborhood newcomers. The area is culturally diverse and might be considered a microcosm of the city as a whole.

Columbia University has recently expanded into the area, which is attracting student residents from all over the world. Together with students from the City College of New York and young professionals fleeing higher prices in other neighborhoods, this influx of younger residents has brought with it more restaurants and bars on W 125th Street to serve this clientele. There are also new ventures, like a rock-climbing gym, to cater to the interests of these students and young professionals. At the same time, there are many small, family-owned shops and restaurants that have been anchors of the neighborhood for multiple generations.

The area has been through a housing upgrade, as older properties have been renovated and abandoned properties have been razed to make room for new development. There are still reasonably priced apartments available. Young professionals are finding that there is a certain cachet to living in West Harlem. It provides a convenient commute to the city and all of its amenities, while providing a sense of escape at the end of a long work day.

While rentals are popular with the student population, the young professionals are delighted to find pre-war brownstones, pre-war co-ops (including some income-capped HDFCs for lower- and middle-income buyers), and post-war condos that they can afford, although prices are rising. Some new low-rise developments, sporting virtual doormen and desired amenities, are cropping up.
