Property Description for 91 Bainbridge Street

(Stuyvesant Heights) | CLOSED. An incredible Landmark gem in Brooklyns coveted Stuyvesant Heights Landmark District built circa 1899 by local neighborhood architect Magnus Dahlander. Commissioned to design a row of 33 beautiful brownstone and limestone homes extending along the north side of the street, 91 Bainbridge sits in the longest row of homes in the Landmark District, and is among the most outstanding, creatively-designed block fronts in the area, enlivened by the juxtaposition of Romanesque Revival, Neo-Renaissance and Queen Anne elements. Unique highlights include basements that give the lower portions a massive Romanesque Revival quality, well balanced by delicate carving at the upper floors, around the doorways and in the friezes which are adorned with swags. This stately 4,672 square foot, 2-Unit historic limestone/brownstone pairing boasts its own exceptional features, such as a 2-story extension with spiral staircase, parlor-level roof deck, front exterior decorative railings, and extensive prewar built-ins: double vanity, window seats, hutch, ice box, broom closet, bar and pantry. Tall bay windows plus original and custom skylights, and abundant prewar details enhance the true character throughout. Original window shutters, pocket doors, wainscoting, original floors with mahogany inlay, original and custom stained glass, pier mirror, ornate fretwork, coffered ceiling and fireplaces are only a few of the property's highlights that optimize the classic elegance of Stuyvesant Heights. Notable modern enhancements include renovated kitchen and bathrooms, wiring for sound, 200-amp electric service, gas furnace, forced air heat, and rear vinyl-clad windows. The owners triplex is large and wonderful, and accessible from the stately front stoop and is a sight to behold! This gracious 6 bedroom/2.5 bath unit has an entry with two unique vestibule features: flloor-to-ceiling woodwork and custom stained glass! From the foyer, be greeted by original pier mirror & bench. But wait, the minute you look up, this is where the intricate detail begins. The front parlor is adorned with filigree, original hardwood floors, wainscoting, crown and picture frame moldings. This floor alone has three (3) parlors: front/center/rear and three (3) decorative fireplaces. Through the central parlor, currently being used as a dining room, and beyond the second set of original pocket doors, your chef's kitchen awaits you. Renovated in 2009, the large eat-in kitchen with island, includes granite counters, mini bar, GE Monogram appliances and is the perfect pass through to the great room or to the spiral staircase leading to the garden. Upper floors house master suite featuring dressing area with double vanity, two walk-in closets and additional bedroom currently being used as a music room and access to the deck. Bedford Stuyvesant | Brooklyn

Quick Profile

Known for its historic brownstones and tight-knit enclave, Bed-Stuy has increasingly left behind its early reputation for being a “bedroom community” and transcended into a highly desirable neighborhood.

Distinct for its aesthetic, it is populated with ornate buildings characterized by cornices, friezes, finials, fluting and other marks of classic architecture. Built up during the period from 1870 to 1900, its historic district runs to the north of Jefferson Avenue, to the east of Malcolm X Boulevard and to the west of Tompkins Avenue.

At one point known as “Brooklyn’s Little Harlem,” the shape of the area has shifted toward attracting a wider demographic of people thanks to the influx of bars, restaurants, antique furniture stores and vintage boutiques. More police enforcement paired with the decline of the crack epidemic at the beginning of the 2000s also opened the door for increased development, as well as the occupation of formerly abandoned buildings and spaces.
