Property Description for 17 Arlington Place

For the first time in 77 years 17 Arlington Place is now on the market and ready for the loving restoration of a new owner. This landmarked four story, two family Neo-Grec style brownstone is located within the recently minted Bedford Historic District. Built in 1886 by famed architect/builder Issac D. Reynolds this stately property is graced with the elegance and charm of 19th century architecture and retains most of its original grandeur. It is adorned with ornate sculpted stone and wooden mantles throughout, wainscoting, amazing pier mirrors, pocket doors, wedding cake molding, ceiling moldings and medallions, original doors, intricate millwork, hardware & ironwork as well as floor to ceiling windows with shutters. This historic home is built 20 x 45, roughly 3,600 sf and sits on an 80 deep lot on one of the most beautiful and quaint blocks in Bed Stuy home to Spike Lees Crooklyn. Currently used as a 3 family; the garden level has an updated kitchen in the back with a small extension that houses a laundry room and leads to the backyard. The grand parlor level is graced with 11ft ceilings, impressive pier mirrors and pocket doors that separate the front and back parlor areas. The top 2 floors are currently used as rental units with pass through kitchens in the middle but still have original mantels, medallions and shutters. The trailblazing Susanna E. C. Russell was the original owner of 17 Arlington Place. Susanna was one of the districts most intriguing figures as she, together with her husband, built nearly 90 row houses in the Bedford Historic District between 1871 and 1892. Remarkably, Susanna was also the architect of at least three projects headed by developers other than her or her husband.17 Arlington Place is located between Halsey & Macon Streets perfectly situated 1 block off the commercial corridors of Fulton, Bedford & Nostrand Aves and the A/C train line at Nostrand Ave.

Quick Profile

Known for its historic brownstones and tight-knit enclave, Bed-Stuy has increasingly left behind its early reputation for being a “bedroom community” and transcended into a highly desirable neighborhood.

Distinct for its aesthetic, it is populated with ornate buildings characterized by cornices, friezes, finials, fluting and other marks of classic architecture. Built up during the period from 1870 to 1900, its historic district runs to the north of Jefferson Avenue, to the east of Malcolm X Boulevard and to the west of Tompkins Avenue.

At one point known as “Brooklyn’s Little Harlem,” the shape of the area has shifted toward attracting a wider demographic of people thanks to the influx of bars, restaurants, antique furniture stores and vintage boutiques. More police enforcement paired with the decline of the crack epidemic at the beginning of the 2000s also opened the door for increased development, as well as the occupation of formerly abandoned buildings and spaces.
