Property Description for 221 West 138th Street

Historic Townhouse, fully renovated. Elegance and Old -World Splendor define this Strivers Row beauty a 20 wide, semi-detached four-story townhouse with a 32 wide lot. A house graced with original detailing seldom seen anymore, and seldom combined so seamlessly with modern amenities. It is striking from both the exterior and interior. Original stained-glass windows grace the side of this Federal Renaissance yellow brick masterpiece. The historic enclave of Strivers Row, famous for its wrought iron gates in the front, has a back alleyway which once offered discrete horse stabling. Now every home has its own garage. Upon entering the foyer and moving into the living room, elegance prevails; an original fireplace, floor to ceiling French windows, period chandeliers, high ceilings with decorative plaster design. Natural light streams in to capture its elegance, as it does in the adjoining gallery where we find the center winding staircase flanked by stained glass. Natural light also streams into the dining room from two exposures, equally splendid with a fireplace, high ceilings and decorative plaster work. This lovely 19th century room offers a nod to modernity with a French door that leads to the rear deck and the modern miele kitchen, discretely adjoined. The powder room is in the hallway. Up the winding staircase, the third and fourth floor both have spacious landings. The original proportions of grandeur, also found in all four bedrooms along with more fireplaces and original chandeliers. Large windows and high ceilings throughout bring elegance to every floor. A truly one-of-a-kind property, fully renovated and restored to its original grace. A house of heritage, as it was once owned by noted Will Marion Cook. Two family home with garden level rental. Four bedrooms, 2 full baths, 2 powder rooms, central air, security system, washer/dryer and garage and alleyway parking.

Harlem | Manhattan

Quick Profile

The neighborhood called West Harlem by the locals is known as Manhattanville to neighborhood newcomers. The area is culturally diverse and might be considered a microcosm of the city as a whole.

Columbia University has recently expanded into the area, which is attracting student residents from all over the world. Together with students from the City College of New York and young professionals fleeing higher prices in other neighborhoods, this influx of younger residents has brought with it more restaurants and bars on W 125th Street to serve this clientele. There are also new ventures, like a rock-climbing gym, to cater to the interests of these students and young professionals. At the same time, there are many small, family-owned shops and restaurants that have been anchors of the neighborhood for multiple generations.

The area has been through a housing upgrade, as older properties have been renovated and abandoned properties have been razed to make room for new development. There are still reasonably priced apartments available. Young professionals are finding that there is a certain cachet to living in West Harlem. It provides a convenient commute to the city and all of its amenities, while providing a sense of escape at the end of a long work day.

While rentals are popular with the student population, the young professionals are delighted to find pre-war brownstones, pre-war co-ops (including some income-capped HDFCs for lower- and middle-income buyers), and post-war condos that they can afford, although prices are rising. Some new low-rise developments, sporting virtual doormen and desired amenities, are cropping up.
