Property Description for 284 Jefferson Ave

A Home for the Ages has come to market in prime Bed-Stuy providing every coveted architectural detail of an 1887 Renaissance Revival house, but completely gut renovated as if New Construction. No expense was spared in creating this luxury two-family Bed-Stuy home with owner's triplex and a luxury one bedroom rental unit with private Entry, private Laundry Room and private or shared Backyard. Set back 10' from the sidewalk by a bluestone patio, 284 Jefferson Avenue is a 4-story (plus full-height finished basement), 3,600 sq ft house with a mint 20' wide brick and brownstone faade carved whimsically with plant life and mythical creatures consistent with the Renaissance Revival style, and dated "1887" on two crests. Bay windows invite all-day sunlight, but it is the hexagonal pyramid at the roof which sets this Bed-Stuy two-family apart from its neighbors and makes 284 Jefferson Avenue instantly iconic. Ascend the classic stone stoop to the wrought iron gates and original carved wood doors, and enter into the colorful, original-tile vestibule. The magic continues inside the Owner's Triplex where restored vintage mahogany paneling, pier mirrors, staircase and doors open into the 400 sq ft Double Parlor with 11' ceilings, exposed brick wall and restored pocket doors. The 215 sq ft white lacquered eat-in kitchen is outfitted with a deluxe stainless steel appliance package (Subzero fridge, Wolf range, Broan outside venting hood and Bosch dishwasher), Calacatta marble counters, abundant cabinet space and is framed by a glass south-facing wall opening onto a private deck for cheerful indoor/outdoor living. The Residential Floors include two en-suite bedrooms with walk in closets, Linen Closet and Laundry Closet on the Second Floor, and a jaw-dropping Third Floor called "The Loft" which has 10' sky-lighted ceilings, a marble Spa Bathroom with free-standing bathtub and shower stall, and 900 square feet of open space flexible enough to be a grand Master Bedroom, separate bedrooms, Den, Office, Art, Dance or Music Studio, or all of the above. Grandeur of this quality is very rare, but rarer still is a house that maintains mint original details with a modern renovation. 284 Jefferson Avenue has all new mechanicals including Mitsubishi split system PVAC, new water heaters and boilers, new electrical, plumbing and roof and new hardwood floors, along with ubiquitous wifi, wireless Sonos sound system, and video and motion security system throughout.

Quick Profile

Known for its historic brownstones and tight-knit enclave, Bed-Stuy has increasingly left behind its early reputation for being a “bedroom community” and transcended into a highly desirable neighborhood.

Distinct for its aesthetic, it is populated with ornate buildings characterized by cornices, friezes, finials, fluting and other marks of classic architecture. Built up during the period from 1870 to 1900, its historic district runs to the north of Jefferson Avenue, to the east of Malcolm X Boulevard and to the west of Tompkins Avenue.

At one point known as “Brooklyn’s Little Harlem,” the shape of the area has shifted toward attracting a wider demographic of people thanks to the influx of bars, restaurants, antique furniture stores and vintage boutiques. More police enforcement paired with the decline of the crack epidemic at the beginning of the 2000s also opened the door for increased development, as well as the occupation of formerly abandoned buildings and spaces.
