Property Description for 379 Monroe Street

NEW TO MARKET - TOWNHOUSE TREASURE!

In charming central Bedford-Stuyvesant--nestled on a quintessential, quiet tree-lined block--you will find this handsome and rare single-family home built in 1899. This is a truly unique opportunity to own both a home and an investment that is refreshingly manageable in size in this vibrant and historic community, at an attainable price!

Enter the parlor level from the classic stoop through antique front double doors. The front and rear parlors are connected by a hallway with built-in storage as well as two closets on one side, and a strikingly beautiful stairway on the other. Oversize windows on both ends of the home allow ample light and air to flow through. Original details abound: gleaming hardwood floors, classic moldings, archways, transoms, pocket doors, and a gorgeous ceiling medallion in the rear parlor.

On the garden level you will find an inviting country-style kitchen in the back of the home leading to a spacious and lovingly tended garden. A full bath sits between the kitchen and the third bedroom, which can also serve as a home office or den. This south-facing room is generously proportioned with original features including tin ceilings, a decorative dumbwaiter, and its own convenient entrance from the street. A shed addition at the rear of the house leads to the garden and serves as a mud room and storage space, perfect to stash all of your outdoor necessities.

Two bright and beautiful bedrooms, one south-facing and one north-facing, each with original marble fireplace mantles, can be found on the second floor. The south-facing master bedroom receives brilliant sunlight for most of the day. The main bath which features a double sink and a large skylight, is conveniently situated between them. The fireplaces can be restored to functioning wood-burning fireplaces.

The cellar provides ample storage, and currently also houses the laundry area. This space can also be transformed into a rec or media room. You have 708 of buildable square footage included with this property! Though it is currently configured as a single-family property, it could also be converted to a two-family, with a one bedroom apartment on the garden level for example. This turn-key home is a dream come true that can be personalized to your own tastes.

This beautiful property is so conveniently situated. You are a stones throw away from great Brooklyn establishments such as Sincerely, Tommy Coffee and Boutique, Bed-Vyne Brew, Eugene & Company, Peaches Hot House and Saraghina, as well as three local parks that feature playgrounds, basketball or tennis courts. You have so many ways to get around from this location! Nearby public transportation includes the A/C trains at Kingston/Throop, the G train at Bedford Nostrand, numerous bus lines going both North-South and East-West, and Citi Bike. JFK is also quick 20 minute drive away.

Quick Profile

Known for its historic brownstones and tight-knit enclave, Bed-Stuy has increasingly left behind its early reputation for being a “bedroom community” and transcended into a highly desirable neighborhood.

Distinct for its aesthetic, it is populated with ornate buildings characterized by cornices, friezes, finials, fluting and other marks of classic architecture. Built up during the period from 1870 to 1900, its historic district runs to the north of Jefferson Avenue, to the east of Malcolm X Boulevard and to the west of Tompkins Avenue.

At one point known as “Brooklyn’s Little Harlem,” the shape of the area has shifted toward attracting a wider demographic of people thanks to the influx of bars, restaurants, antique furniture stores and vintage boutiques. More police enforcement paired with the decline of the crack epidemic at the beginning of the 2000s also opened the door for increased development, as well as the occupation of formerly abandoned buildings and spaces.
