Property Description for 217 East 5th Street, CARRIAGE

Tucked away on a quiet tree-lined street just east of the Bowery, the Carriage House at 217 East 5th Street is a charming freestanding residence in the heart of the East Village. This unique, one-bedroom, two-and-a-half-bathroom home spans three full floors plus a flexible lower level, and boasts multiple outdoor spaces that are made for entertaining.

From the street, one first enters 217 East 5th Street through the well maintained turn of the century building that houses the other 9 residences that encompass the entire cooperative. At the end of the ground floor is a private entrance which opens to a secluded bluestone courtyard surrounded by lush greenery. On the main level of the home is a large living room with one of three gas fireplaces, a wet bar fully equipped with a GE Monogram refrigerator, ice maker and built-in wine fridge, and french doors that open directly onto the private courtyard. This level is the ideal gathering spot for seamless indoor/outdoor living. Also on this level is a foyer with a large coat closet and a renovated powder room.

Up an appointed spiral staircase on the second level is an oversized, open chef’s kitchen, dining room, and lounge area with an additional fireplace. The beautifully renovated windowed kitchen features custom bamboo cabinetry, Caesarstone countertops, and is equipped with a 36-inch sub-zero refrigerator, vented Viking oven and stove top, Bosch dishwasher, built-in GE Profile microwave, and integrated Marvel wine cooler. Adjacent to the kitchen is a large formal dining area with french doors opening onto a “dining” deck, which is also accessible by a large outdoor staircase from the courtyard.

On the third level is the full-floor master suite. A spacious sitting room with a third fireplace and pocket doors lead to the bedroom that is outfitted with built-in cabinetry. A large dressing room boasts floor-to-ceiling custom shelving and storage. The serene, windowed master bathroom features a dual jet shower with Grohe hardware, a double vanity with Robern medicine cabinets, a Toto toilet, and is finished with blue ceramic subway tiled walls and basketweave marble floors.

The top level of this home is the expansive rooftop. This show stopping outdoor space provides the perfect oasis from city living. There is an outdoor kitchen with a gas grill and sink, a dining area with a covered pergola, and a large lounge area. This level (as well as the courtyard) is beautifully landscaped and includes electrical and water hookups and an automatic irrigation system.

On the lower level of the home is a large room that offers multiple opportunities to function as a den, game room, home office, or guest room. A marble clad full-bathroom that features heated floors and Kohler hardware has been newly installed. Also on this level are custom built-in oversized closets and a large laundry/storage room which features a full sized vented Whirlpool washer and dryer.

Other noteworthy features inside the home are an A/V system and full wiring throughout the house, 7-inch wide plank oak floors, newly painted exterior wrought iron stairs, and north, south, and western exposures throughout. The Carriage House underwent extensive renovations by the current owners to completely modernize the home. These renovations included replacing the roof and its decking and replacing all of the blue stone tiles in the courtyard. Additionally, the first three levels of the home were totally stripped down to the studs and rebuilt.

217 East 5th Street presents a rare opportunity to own a secluded, free-standing home with unparalleled outdoor space in downtown Manhattan. Close by is Cooper Square and Astor Place, as well as some of the East Village’s most notable restaurants in addition to the Standard Hotel.

East Village | Manhattan

Quick Profile

The East Village has two distinct moods. By day, it is quiet and peaceful. Everyone is out and about, either working or relaxing at Tompkins Square Park, strolling or jogging along the East River, or hanging out in one of the subsets of cultural activity, such as St. Mark’s Place.

But then night falls, and the East Village comes to life, keeping the entertainment and nightlife going long after the other neighborhoods have called it quits for the night. People from all five boroughs flock to the dive bars and speakeasies, head for their favorite cafes and restaurants, or drop in to a music venue to listen to hot tunes or cool jazz and dance the night away. Don’t worry, you don’t have to “know somebody” to gain admittance to even the most popular venues. You won’t find velvet ropes, bouncers, or and a waiting list at the door of most places. Just walk right in and enjoy yourself.

Be prepared for the increased population during fall through spring, when NYU is in session. College students will be everywhere, contributing to the youthful essense of the neighborhood.
