Property Description for 84 Mercer Street, 2-C

CALLING ALL INTERNATIONAL BUYERS!! Watch the CBS NEWS video for a special tour of the loft. You do not have to be a famous art collector to live like one. Come home to this gallery style full floor loft in the heart of Soho. Housed in an impressive six-story building which dates back to 1884, the cast-iron structure with extra height windows was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1978. This dream loft was gutted and smartly rebuilt piece by piece to its present mint status by a prominent art dealer. Working in conjunction with architect Todd Ernst, who famously specializes in galleries and loft spaces, the 4,000 sq ft loft apartment is both well-defined and flexible, thanks to a series of ceiling to floor luxurious velvet draperies that open and close to reveal hidden spaces and create rooms, all at the touch of a button. After a day of exploring the best art galleries, restaurants, stores and shops - all a pleasant stroll in your neighborhood - enter your private keyed elevator to ascend to the sprawling 85' x 20' entertainment space with 15' ceilings that is currently showcasing the large works of Haring and Basquiat. The sleek and stunning chef's custom designed and executed stainless steel kitchen/great room (itself a work of art) includes a 600-bottle wine storage unit atop Viking and Sub-zero appliances. This elegant and unique loft provides the best of Soho living. In addition to the expansive living and dining space, the loft has been configured with two bedrooms and three incredible spa bathrooms. The main spaces enjoy natural brightness from oversized windows craved by artists everywhere. The mint renovation includes the invisible installation of cutting edge technology that places every desirable luxury at your fingertips. The customized Audio Visual Creston Technology System controls everything in the apartment: temperature, lighting, music, video, shades and room-defining curtains. Beyond and above the dining room, an aerie of a mezzanine is reached by a transparent glass bridge and staircase. This space which is both intimate and open, camouflages the loft's generous storage unit (13' x 16') behind a wall of books and paintings. Just past the guest room and bath, the generously sized master suite features 10 custom made closets, and a large screen video. The lavish ensuite includes an oversized steam room with shower heads at both ends, spa tub, and private lavatory with its own built in library. Best of all, the loft can be sold fully furnished! After visiting this amazing loft and experiencing the vibrancy of SoHo all around you, why would you want to live anywhere else? Quick Profile

Famous for its art galleries, designer boutiques, cobblestone streets and cast-iron architecture, SoHo has always been full of buzz - wowing both tourists and locals alike. It’s rich with history (more so than most neighborhoods). So, whether you’re a computer nerd, serial shopper or foodie, you’re guaranteed to find something exciting to do in this storied neighborhood.

SoHo is bounded by Houston Street to the north, Canal Street in the south, 6th Avenue to the west and Crosby Street on the east.

The neighborhood has gone through many ups and downs over its long history. Enough to make a voluminous history book. When the Dutch discovered Lower Manhattan, they came across indigenous people living on the island. Technically, the American Indians were the first Manhattanites and then the Dutch moved in making them the second original Manhattanites.

After the Civil War ended, the west side of Lower Manhattan flourished because the shipping routes changed. Textiles and the need for all types of products increased. Warehouses and large lofts were built and replaced farmland to accommodate the commerce. Many of those buildings are still standing and give SoHo its unique character and charm.

The bustling commerce eventually stopped and in the mid 1800’s, well-to-do families began moving into SoHo. They built exquisite buildings, many of which are characterized by their cast-iron facades. Soon after it became residential, theatres, music halls and eateries followed. The wealthy eventually left and the once prosperous district began another decline.

The 1960’s marks SoHo’s most definitive period. City planners lost their bid to build a major highway that would level a portion of the neighborhood and many historic buildings. After their failed attempt to revitalize SoHo, artists quickly moved into the empty lofts and warehouses. Some legally, and other move-ins, not so legal. The city turned a blind eye. Artists of all mediums working from their new creative spaces created a ripple in the art scene. It was such a ripple that the well-to-do uptown crowd started buying their art and hanging out with them. The uptown folks eventually moved into the neighborhood and began buying up the lofts and warehouses. As soon as the word spread, up went the property values and the rest is history.
