Property Description for 492 Halsey Street

Contract Signed.
Handsome & Historic 20-Foot Wide 3-Story 2-Family House

Built in 1885 in the Neo-Grec Style by Lambert and Mason with architect, Isaac D. Reynolds, 492 Halsey Street is a handsome 3-story brownstone located in the Bedford Historic District in Stuyvesant Heights. This historic property, which has retained many of its original details, was once owned by Thomas Lewis Doyle who resided there with his family from the late 1890's until the time of his death in 1939. Mr. Lewis Doyle was a celebrated organist at several Brooklyn churches and the supervisor of music in the Brooklyn Public School system. Last offered for sale 39 years ago, this very special home has had only five owners over the course of 134 years.

Garden Floor
This legal 2-family home features a magnificent and beautifully renovated eat-in-kitchen on the garden floor which has been finished with espresso wood & glass cabinetry, gorgeous granite countertops and stainless steel appliances. Spanning more than 20 feet, this spectacular chef's kitchen was designed for those who love to cook and entertain. Adjacent to the kitchen is a wonderful dining room, family room or bedroom, depending on your needs, with 8-3 foot ceilings plus a renovated bathroom. A spectacular south-facing garden that is over 40 feet deep is located just off the kitchen and through an extension which serves as a laundry room. In the front of the house, there is a large planting bed planted with hydrangeas, as well as a gorgeous stoop, historic fence and historic gate.

Parlor Floor
The parlor floor of 492 Halsey retains the elegance and grandeur from when the house was first built. With 11 foot ceilings the parlor floor is configured with a large front parlor and a gorgeous rear parlor separated by the original pocket doors. Adjacent to the rear parlor is a smaller south-facing room which would be ideal as an office. Original details on this floor include intricate wood-work including door and window trim, French doors and pocket doors, original plaster medallions, original wainscoting, wood shutters and hardwood floors. There's a beautiful pier mirror in the front parlor and a stunning decorative fireplace in the rear parlor which features the original glazed tilework, the original bronze fire grate with a depiction of a musician and a magnificent original wooden mirrored overmantel.

Third Floor
The third floor consists of a large north-facing bedroom overlooking Halsey Street with a beautiful decorative fireplace with the original glazed tile, original bronze fire grate decorated with a ribbon and floral motif and a wooden mirrored overmantel. A smaller north-facing bedroom is currently configured as an enormous windowed walk-in closet. The large south-facing bedroom overlooking the garden features a third decorative fireplace that includes a wonderful bronze fire grate with a figure on horseback and another wooden mirrored overmantel. There is also a renovated kitchen on this floor that originally would have been a bedroom which faces south towards a magnolia tree. Additional features of the third floor include a renovated bathroom with a skylight, a stained-glass skylight in the hallway, original hardwood floors and tall 9.5 foot ceilings.

Basement
The home has a finished basement with tile floors, recessed lighting and a ceiling height of 7 feet. There are also two large storage rooms, a mechanical room and a meter room on the this level.

Additional
492 Halsey Street is located in very close proximity to the Utica Ave A/C trains as well as the Halsey Street Station J train. This landmarked home is zoned RB6, has 1,280 square feet of unused FAR and annual real estate taxes of $3,522. This property will be delivered vacant.

Quick Profile

Known for its historic brownstones and tight-knit enclave, Bed-Stuy has increasingly left behind its early reputation for being a “bedroom community” and transcended into a highly desirable neighborhood.

Distinct for its aesthetic, it is populated with ornate buildings characterized by cornices, friezes, finials, fluting and other marks of classic architecture. Built up during the period from 1870 to 1900, its historic district runs to the north of Jefferson Avenue, to the east of Malcolm X Boulevard and to the west of Tompkins Avenue.

At one point known as “Brooklyn’s Little Harlem,” the shape of the area has shifted toward attracting a wider demographic of people thanks to the influx of bars, restaurants, antique furniture stores and vintage boutiques. More police enforcement paired with the decline of the crack epidemic at the beginning of the 2000s also opened the door for increased development, as well as the occupation of formerly abandoned buildings and spaces.
