Property Description for 280 Washington Ave

The Brooklyn MansionShown by appointment only. Welcome to The Pfizer Mansion, 280 Washington Avenue in Clinton Hill, Brooklyn. Built in 1887, this 10,000 square foot, block-through property, with 7 bedrooms, 5 full-baths, 3 half-baths, an elevator, and private parking leaves nothing to be desired. This is the crme de la crme of city living - 21st century luxury with a historic past, and the perfect amenities to match. At your request, a tour of this property can be arranged, for buyers, with notice. I look forward to showing you a property that is truly one in a New York million. The DetailsAlmost 5,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor entertainment space make this the home for the notable and distinguished. At 105 feet long, the parlor level has a formal living room, sitting room, dining room, and eat-in chefs kitchen, spotlighting the unmatched work of skillful craftsmen from the last two centuries. The garden level features an informal sitting room, wine cellar, and a sunken party room. From the parlor and garden levels, guests can access the private parking and woodland garden designed by the prestigious and award-winning landscape design firm Rees Roberts + Partners. Upstairs are four elegant suites, two bedrooms, an office and library; each with distinct design brought to life through one-of-a-kind features. Each room is an unrepeatable sanctuary, which must be seen to be believed. The RestorationA multi-million dollar renovation, designed by the owner, Jessica Warren, of JP Warren Interiors and Neuhaus Design Architecture, was executed floor-by-floor by artisans, resurrecting the history and priceless details of this 1887 Queen Anne mansion. It is evident from the restoration that this was a labor of love. Over hundreds of hours, craftsmen restored and created features unique to this distinct home, by hand. The yards of woodwork and plaster moldings throughout the home, the dozen plus immaculately revamped stained glass windows, and the numerous floors meticulously resurrected and recreated are just a fraction of what was breathed into this home to give it a new life. Hand-painted de Gournay wallpaper in the Askew pattern covers the walls of a bathing room, which was formerly a nuns chapel, and swoony peacock-blue wallpaper with glamorous faces and matching blue glass cover the walls of another bath. Each bedroom, with rare woodwork and features that sets them apart from each other, was brought back to life. This home was restored to tell a timeless story, and there wasnt a nook or cranny spared from its owners platinum touch. The HistoryThe Pfizer Mansion, built by Charles Erhart, co-founder of Pfizer Pharmaceutical and cousin of Charles Pfizer, for his daughter has only had five distinct occupants. Walter Rappelyea Davies, a prominent attorney descending from an early Brooklyn land-owning family and treasurer for The Brooklyn Committee for the Prevention of Tuberculosis, was the second owner. In 1925, The Brooklyn Public Library used the house as their offices. During that time the mansion featured a tea room, a stenographers room and a mailroom. In 1930, the Church purchased the house to use as the Bishop's residence, and later used the property as the St. Angela Hall school library and convent. In 1991, Legion Davies, a rock musician, purchased the home, which he shared with Killing Joke bandmate, bass player, Paul Raven, also of Prong and Ministry. In 2007, the home was purchased by the Warrens and lived in for five years before becoming a distinguished bed and breakfast, The Notorious B&B. This mansion has a true story to tell. Clinton Hill | Brooklyn

Quick Profile

Tucked behind the Brooklyn Navy Yard in central Brooklyn is the quiet residential neighborhood of Clinton Hill. Once a strictly working-class neighborhood, Clinton Hill has become known for its elegant brownstones and stately mansions that were built as Manhattanites crossed the East River in the 1920s in search of the supposed health benefits that came from living “on the hill,” which has an elevation of 95 feet. Now you will also find newer luxury apartment and condo buildings interspersed throughout the neighborhood.

The Pratt Institute and St. Joseph College give the area a certain energy that comes from having a college in your town, while it’s leafy streets, some with their original cobblestones, and slower pace attract young families. Millennials and professionals are flocking to Clinton Hill in search of a reasonably priced neighborhood that offers both nightlife and an easy commute to Manhattan. Clinton Hill is a beautiful neighborhood with a suburban feel and firm roots in its past that also offers plenty of urban amenities.

New businesses are showing up in Clinton Hill on a regular basis, adding to the current proliferation of coffee shops, restaurants, and bars. As the population changes, new entertainment and nightlife venues are migrating to the area to meet the demand. Barclays Center is within easy walking distance, offering exciting sporting events and concerts.
