Property Description for 496 Sixth Ave, HOUSE

This four bedroom, three bathroom townhouse has been inventively and lovingly renovated and restored to create a new home inside a historic shell in the heart of the most sought-after neighborhood in New York. The floors, walls, ceilings, windows, moldings, kitchen, bathrooms, bedrooms, and back deck are updated. This tremendous residence enjoys terrific natural light and large proportions (in a neighborhood known for tighter spaces), and the addition of a great room with sky light and landscaped back deck give the home all of the benefits of the suburbs right in the center of Greenwich Village.

One flight up is the parlor, dining area, central gourmet kitchen and great room, with direct access to an over-sized back deck. The living room has a wall of west-facing windows, rich wood floors, a fireplace, exposed brick, distinctive chandeliers, recessed lighting, and beautiful custom modern wood work juxtaposed against the classic prewar bones of the historic dwelling.

The kitchen is a perfect union of form and function. Full-sized stainless steel refrigerator, range and dishwasher contrast beautifully with custom paneled cabinetry and 21st Century mosaic back splash. White solid-core cabinetry and all white stone counter tops bring a level of refinement and utility worthy of a competitive cooking show!

French doors lead to a massive great room, which has a fireplace with classic mantel, a multi-beamed five-paneled skylight, and sliding glass doors onto an astonishing back terrace. The great room has beautiful wood floors, recessed lighting, and open S-P-A-C-E.

The rear deck is classical in its architecture and layout, with modern accents in the landscaping and custom outdoor lighting. This secluded area is fenced in nicely for privacy, and it is fully exposed to direct natural sunlight. Urns and planter boxes finish the design elements making this another extraordinary "room" in this unbelievable home.

There is a full spa quality bathroom on this floor, featuring marble tiles, mosaic floors, and elegant wood paneled cabinetry. There is a deep soaking tub with designer shower fixtures.

On the third and fourth floors of the building are four bedrooms and two bathrooms. Each bedroom is light and airy, with prewar character found in restored moldings, hardwood floors and fireplace, as well as modern convenience found in the washer-dryer and updated storage features.

Please call for a private tour of this surprising home, which is filled with modern design inspiration set against a venerable backdrop of a bygone era.

Greenwich Village | Manhattan

Quick Profile

Birthplace of beatniks, Greenwich Village has always been a neighborhood bursting with creativity, home to artists, poets, musicians and writers. There is a lot of foot traffic in the neighborhood, as it gives convenient access to many other neighborhoods. There are a lot of popular eateries on MacDougal Street and bars on Bleecker Street. The neighborhood has a bit of a college-town feel, due to the presence of NYU. There aren’t large chain stores here, so it isn’t really a mecca for shopaholics, but you can find interesting vintage stores and specialty boutiques.

Available housing is centered on pre-war walk-ups. You can find good deals on the quieter, tree-lined side streets, as opposed to the bustling avenues. There are pockets of brownstones and townhouses, some dating back to the early 19th century, throughout the neighborhood, as well. You will find more luxurious housing in the newer high-rise buildings on Park and Fifth Avenues.

Washington Square Park is the heart of the neighborhood. If you sit near the Arch and close your eyes, you might catch an echo of the music and social history of the Park, floating through the air. Greats like Joan Baez, Bob Dylan, and Paul Simon started their storied careers right here in Greenwich Village. Today, the Village is a celebration of diversity, where everyone is welcome.
