Property Description for 611 West 111th Street, 68

Elegant and light-filled, this renovated five-room, corner apartment sits on the top floor of a charming pre-war building and boasts northern, southern, and western exposures. Immaculately restored to preserve the ambiance and sophistication of the early 20th century, with original parquet floors (and added abundant built-in storage). Designed to welcome your friends and guests, the grand living room is at the heart of this home and opens up to the oversized formal dining room with a bay window, making entertaining effortless. North and south exposures in this dynamic space mean direct sunlight all day for brunches that last the whole afternoon and the feeling of the floor-through apartment. All windows face large interior courtyards, so street noise is literally unheard of. French doors between the bedroom and dining room give you wide flexibility in how to use the space. The generous kitchen has a warm terra-cotta tile floor, cherry wood cabinets, Subzero fridge, and a new dishwasher. Grow herbs in the huge, south-facing window. The Markenfield, located in prime Morningside Heights, is a pet-friendly six-floor coop with an elevator, laundry room, bike room, and storage lockers. This well-maintained building with excellent financials has a live-in super and is located on a tree-lined street with direct access to Riverside Park at the western end. Half a block to the 1 train, a short walk to Columbia University and St John the Divine. On the same block as the famed Bank St School. Close proximity to Riverside Church, Miller Theater, and Manhattan School of Music.

Morningside Heights | Manhattan

Quick Profile

Due to the large number of institutes of higher learning that are housed within its borders, most notably Columbia University, Morningside Heights has a very definite college-town vibe. It has been dubbed the “Academic Acropolis,” both for the large number of schools and for the fact that the neighborhood is built high atop the Manhattan schist bluffs that are the geological bedrock of NYC. From this vantage point, which is the highest point of land in all of Manhattan, you can take in stunning views of upper Manhattan and the Hudson River. Sunsets are especially breathtaking from Riverside Park.

Walk through Morningside Heights and you’ll see a diverse population, especially when the schools are in session. It has a generally quiet atmosphere, bounded by large green spaces, dotted with small cafes, specialty stores, and restaurants that offer all manner of international cuisine. There is a modest nightlife consisting of intimate bars and small musical venues, many of which are open to the wee hours of the morning, and frequented by students.

Housing is primarily pre-war buildings that have larger apartments and beautiful architecture clustered around Broadway. You can find affordable walk-ups in low-rise buildings on the side streets. Many of the residential buildings in the area actually are owned by Columbia University.
