Property Description for 147 14th Street, 2

You’ve been picturing your perfect home in Brooklyn for some time now; a modern floor-through with two bedrooms and two bathrooms, high ceilings and a little outdoor space. Something that feels like sophisticated townhouse living with all the benefits of a condo. Not too much to ask for. Now imagine waking up in your bedroom and quietly making your way to your en suite bathroom to look into the mirror, reminding yourself that dreams do come true. The temperature is perfect, thanks to the Daikin climate control split system. The Brizo bathroom fixtures complement the polished porcelain and statuary marble walls and floor, evoking the spa experience you always wished for. You check in on the second bedroom, making sure everyone is up, then head down the hallway to the kitchen to start your morning rituals, taking the time to really appreciate the feeling of serenity provided by those voluminous eleven-foot ceilings. The day really begins here in the heart of your home, in the kitchen and living area. Grab your pan cake ingredients from the Fisher and Paykel three-door fridge. The low maintenance (easy clean) white calico quartz counter and backsplash complement the imported Miton ‘Sincro” wood cabinets which feature clever, space-saving storage solutions for all your baking utensils and kitchen toys. Bertazzoni provides the stylish four-burner gas cooktop as well as two very clever 24” electric wall ovens, one incorporating a microwave. And clean-up is always a breeze with your power clean Moen faucet and artfully hidden Miele dishwasher. Taking a seat at your dining table, you can pause to take in the scene. As the morning sun streams into your living room through nine-foot-tall, south-facing, European style tilt and turn windows, your sense of peace makes you recall earlier morning plans. Taking the steps from your bedroom, head out to your private garden for a little morning stretch or perhaps some sandcastle play time before you get on with daily duties. Thankfully your home features plenty of closets, and the spacious laundry room makes washing day a breeze. Everything is in its place. While Union Square is barely 30 minutes away by subway, for Michelin quality dining you can stick to the neighborhood. Wrapped by the F, G and R trains, and resting neatly between Park Slope, Carroll Gardens and Cobble Hill, Gowanus today presents a canvas for change. Its industrial buildings are rapidly filling with any number of activities, from archery and axe throwing to tennis and shuffleboard. Meanwhile, local artisans continue to ply their trade, whether it be craft beer and pickles or pottery and glass blowing. Third Avenue provides the commercial backbone. After a busy day out and about, return home via your private entry. Relax in your spacious living room. Prepare a home-cooked meal, or when weather permits, enjoy the twilight hours in your private garden over BBQ and drinks. Life is good here. Gowanus | Brooklyn

Quick Profile

Gowanus is a colorful neighborhood with an industrial aesthetic, tree-lined streets, historic structures, as well as luxury condos and rental buildings. It has a great art scene, fantastic eateries and bars and a 1.8-mile canal that snakes through most of the neighborhood. The variety of elements make it a desirable place to live.

The neighborhood is on the crest of a major change due to a recently passed rezoning plan that will allow more residential construction. Especially around the Gowanus Canal where construction was once prohibited. The plan will bring new jobs, affordable housing, and create a neighborhood with walkable green spaces and amenities. It’s safe to say that change is coming to Gowanus.

Gowanus is bounded by Hoyt Street to the west, 4th Avenue to the east, Warren Street, Baltic Street and Wycoff Street to the north, and Gowanus Expressway to the south.

The neighborhood is named after Gouwane, a chief in the Canarsie Indian tribe. His name, according to the history books, translates to “the sleeper.” Other historic accounts say that the Gowanus name comes from the Dutch word gouwee, which translates to the word bay. Based on early New York History surrounding Dutch settlers and native tribes, both accounts seem plausible.

Gowanus began development as far back as the 1630s when the Dutch arrived. They began building farms and soon realized the marshy lands they settled were not the best for growing crops and farming. They began damming up certain areas of the land with hopes of creating better soil and powering their windmills. This was the beginning of the formation of the Gowanus canal.

The natural estuary was once brimming with oysters and fish. But in the 1800s, the canal was turned into an industrial and transportation waterway. In the mid 1900’s, industrial factories like manufactured gas plants, paper mills, and other businesses opened along the canal and casually polluted the water. It’s cleanup efforts have come a long way but there is still much work to be done.

The newly approved Gowanus rezoning plan has caused lots of buzz this year. Mayor Bill DeBlasio's plan will rezone 82 blocks which will pave the way for an estimated 8,500 new apartments, 3,000 of which would be offered to low and moderate-income New Yorkers. The plan includes major improvements to the local infrastructure. Although the rezoning plan might not create a housing boom today or tomorrow, proponents say the rezoning sets the stage for major growth in Gowanus in the decades to come.

The F, G, D, N, R, and W subway lines service the Gowanus neighborhood.
