Property Description for 598 Jefferson Ave

Spacious, bright, sleek and also with great character — 598 Jefferson Avenue is the design-savvy buyers dream. With graphic, original oak flooring throughout, a gryphon-emblazoned paneled staircase with newel post light, original shutters and moldings — 598 uncannily combines the best of the turn-of-the-century with a minimalist sensibility and the convenience of modern-day living. You’ll feel light as air and grounded in history all at once. This chic 2-family renovation features an owner’s triplex over a separately metered garden apartment that is finished as impeccably as the main living space for optimal rental income.

This stately 4-story brownstone was built in 1895 by Frank and Theodore Swimm in the Romanesque/Renaissance Revival style. The distinguished triple-vaulted facade features a dog-legged stoop, original ironwork, and carved foliated ornamentation around the entryway.

Once inside, the breadth of the open parlor floor and ubiquitous light is unforgettable. The bright, white, open space is warmed by original restored oak flooring, a wood-bring fireplace and titanium black natural stone quartzite countertops. The striking kitchen island is both luxurious and practical, comfortably seating four. Custom kitchen cabinetry provide ample storage and conceals top-end appliances by Miele and Bosch. A telescopic downdraft cooking exhaust does not intrude on the gorgeous streamlined design. The concealed coat closet is an unexpected brownstone luxury — essential for this perfect entertaining space. Down one level is a half bath — such a smart and practical solution, adding convenience and privacy for your guests. Central AC will cool you down in summer, and access to the landscaped back garden make hosting a no-brainer.

The fabulous gryphon stairway ornament will safeguard all those who pass upstairs. The third floor is ideally purposed as a complete master suite with classically lux en suite bath, dressing room / walk-in closet and an oversized den or office. You can opt to use the front room as a separate bedroom as well. One more flight up to the fourth floor are two more bedrooms with a common den/play area in between. Here you’ll also find a full bath and laundry room. A bonus side room offers additionally office space, storage or guest room.

This superior renovation has left no stone unturned. With all new plumbing and electrical, central AC plus Daikin 3-zone split unit AC system, upgraded roof, Northwest security system, Ring video doorbell system, well-maintained boiler and new water heater, all top-end appliances and fixtures — you and your loved ones can rest easy.

Jefferson Avenue is one of the most beautiful stretches in Stuyvesant Heights with intact brownstones side-by-side. 598 Jefferson is a short walk down lovely Stuyvesant Avenue to the express A/C trains Utica Avenue stop. Enjoy nearby eateries such as Saraghina, Peaches, Zaca Café, Mama Fox, Trad Room, Chez Oskar, Michelin-reviewed L’Antagoniste, Boca Santa; see world-class jazz at Bar LunAtico, enjoy cocktails at Casablanca and grocery shop at Halsey Traders.

Bedford Stuyvesant | Brooklyn

Quick Profile

Known for its historic brownstones and tight-knit enclave, Bed-Stuy has increasingly left behind its early reputation for being a “bedroom community” and transcended into a highly desirable neighborhood.

Distinct for its aesthetic, it is populated with ornate buildings characterized by cornices, friezes, finials, fluting and other marks of classic architecture. Built up during the period from 1870 to 1900, its historic district runs to the north of Jefferson Avenue, to the east of Malcolm X Boulevard and to the west of Tompkins Avenue.

At one point known as “Brooklyn’s Little Harlem,” the shape of the area has shifted toward attracting a wider demographic of people thanks to the influx of bars, restaurants, antique furniture stores and vintage boutiques. More police enforcement paired with the decline of the crack epidemic at the beginning of the 2000s also opened the door for increased development, as well as the occupation of formerly abandoned buildings and spaces.
