Property Description for 327 West 20th Street

327 West 20th Street, a five-story landmark townhouse built in 1861 by William S. Hunt in the Italianate style, is located in the heart of Chelsea's Historic District on one of the finest tree-lined, townhouse blocks. This two-family home is currently configured as a gracious 4 floor owner's residence with private entrance, 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, 2 living rooms, office, 40 foot deep garden, and cellar.

A separate 1 bedroom garden-level apartment, with private entrance and fireplace, can be used for rental income, a guest apartment, or integrated into the owner's residence. Both the owner's unit and the garden-level apartment have access to the garden.

This sunny, light-filled private residence enjoys unobstructed northern and southern views overlooking 20th and 21st Streets. Architectural details include recently restored, landmark-approved brownstone facade, cornice, and lintels, new south-facing windows, original interior sweeping staircase with skylight atop, and 3 marble fireplaces.

Upon entering this home at the parlor level, the welcoming foyer leads into the seating area, study, and one of the two spacious living rooms with French doors that access the lush garden - a private and peaceful oasis that is perfect for entertaining.

The 3rd floor kitchen and family room boast 10 foot high ceilings and 7 foot tall windows - sun washed, bright, and airy. The kitchen offers Viking Professional Series appliances, a Sub-Zero refrigerator, and stainless steel counters that combine chic industrial and modern country living. The kitchen flows into the family room, which has a fireplace and unobstructed northern views.

On the 4th floor, there are two bedrooms with unobstructed light to the north and south; the rear bedroom captures views over the garden. There is also laundry, a 22-foot long wall of storage closets, and a full bathroom on this floor.

The 5th floor master suite occupies the entire top floor with an ornate oval skylight. The sun-flooded, king sized master bedroom has south-facing windows overlooking 20th Street and downtown. A sitting area, master bathroom, and a large walk-in closet/dressing room complete this master suite.

The garden level apartment, with a private separate entrance, offers the same pre-war charm as the main house. The apartment has proven to be a reliable source of rental income. Also, subject to the Landmark Preservation Committee, it is possible to expand this home and/or convert it into a single family residence.

The location of this West Chelsea home is walking distance to the High Line, Hudson River Park, the Whitney Museum, Chelsea's Art Gallery District, Chelsea Market, Chelsea Piers Sports Complex, Avenues: The World School, Hudson Yards, Young Woo Super Pier, and an array of upscale restaurants and shops. If you appreciate privacy, modern elegance, and pre-war charm, this is the home for you.

Chelsea | Manhattan

Quick Profile

The row houses portray the world-class architecture of Greek Revival, Italianate and Georgian styles. The population is both ethnically and socially diverse, which is reflected in the restaurants and retail businesses in the neighborhood.

Western Chelsea is the center of the NYC art world, where you will find more than 200 art galleries housed in rehabbed factories and warehouses, as well as in newly-constructed buildings.

While people of many different cultures call Chelsea home, it has been a mecca over the years for people in the LGBTQ community. One census reported that as many as 22% of its residents were gay couples. Eighth Avenue is a trendy area for LGBTQ-oriented dining and shopping. Although it no longer draws the LGBTQ population that it once did, Chelsea still has many popular alternative bars.

Chelsea is primarily residential, consisting of a mixture of diverse complexes, low-rise apartment blocks, tenements, townhouses, renovated row houses, and luxury high-rises.

Chelsea is an interesting and sought-after place to live, with unique clothing boutiques, restaurants, and delis representing cultures from around the world. In addition to its quirky establishments, Chelsea has fine dining restaurants and a vibrant, hip nightlife, which adds to its allure.

Chelsea is well-served by public transportation. At least six city bus routes traverse Chelsea. There are three NYC subway routes with stops on Seventh Avenue, three on Eighth Avenue, and two more on Sixth Avenue. The 34th Street - Hudson Yards Station opened in 2015 with its main entrance in Chelsea.
