Property Description for 593 Jefferson Ave

593 Jefferson Avenue is a classic 20Â’ wide Romanesque/Renaissance Revival brownstone, featuring turn-of-the-century design details thoughtfully combined with the comfort of contemporary living. This four-floor, two-family home, is configured as an upper and lower duplex with modernized electrical and plumbing systems and central air. Designed by Langston and Dahlander, the original facade showcases decorative wreath carving, stained glass and an ornamental cornice. Up the dog-leg style stoop, you enter the parlor hallway and are greeted by the front-hall pier mirror, original parquet floors, artful fretwork, decorative plaster relief and rich mahogany millwork. The Parlor level features an additional pier mirror, wainscotting and a stunning fretwork-carved screen that has been meticulously stripped back to its original glory. YouÂ’ll enjoy the modern kitchen designed around a marble counter center island with black cabinetry; all washed in light from the triple-bay window overlooking the garden. A sweet half-bath can be found tucked neatly in the corner.. On the garden level, a generously sized front bedroom is anchored by an original fireplace, solid oak woodwork and waist-high wainscoting. Down the hall, passing the full bath with custom arched opening to the shower and tub, is a tranquil second bedroom warmed by two windows. An additional office extension rounds out the floor, providing yet another room for work or play. The open concept living room on the second floor showcases another elegant fireplace and flows seamlessly into a pass-through kitchen with an abundance of storage and a proper dining room; accessed from either direction, for effortless entertaining. A windowed full bath is conveniently located off the stairs. Continuing to the upper level of this duplex, a lovely master bedroom features the third working fireplace. Down the hall youÂ’ll find original floor-to-ceiling storage cabinets and a spacious laundry room the doubles as a walk-in-closet. The middle of the floor has a study that leads to a library in the front room that can easily serve as an additional bedroom. Nine-foot ceilings, a full bath and a second bedroom complete this graceful floor. The garden has been thoughtfully landscaped and thereÂ’s no better place to enjoy relaxing with a morning espresso or an evening Aperol Spritz under the pergola. Peaceful enough for morning yoga, and spacious enough for a BBQ under the stars, youÂ’ll appreciate the depth of the 100Â’ lot. 593 Jefferson Ave is located on a charming tree-lined brownstone street, near the express A/C trains at Utica Avenue and multiple bus lines. The neighborhood abounds with choice establishments like Saraghina, Zaca, Peaches, Mama Fox, Skal Brooklyn, Casablanca and L'Antagoniste, LunAtico and Halsey Traders. Showings are by appointment only.

Quick Profile

Known for its historic brownstones and tight-knit enclave, Bed-Stuy has increasingly left behind its early reputation for being a “bedroom community” and transcended into a highly desirable neighborhood.

Distinct for its aesthetic, it is populated with ornate buildings characterized by cornices, friezes, finials, fluting and other marks of classic architecture. Built up during the period from 1870 to 1900, its historic district runs to the north of Jefferson Avenue, to the east of Malcolm X Boulevard and to the west of Tompkins Avenue.

At one point known as “Brooklyn’s Little Harlem,” the shape of the area has shifted toward attracting a wider demographic of people thanks to the influx of bars, restaurants, antique furniture stores and vintage boutiques. More police enforcement paired with the decline of the crack epidemic at the beginning of the 2000s also opened the door for increased development, as well as the occupation of formerly abandoned buildings and spaces.
