Property Description for 437 MacDonough Street

When first visiting 437 MacDonough Street we felt immediately transported to a serene, residence somewhere upstate — a bucolic utopia where beautiful, historic homes abound and the owners have a decidedly urban attitude. Fortunately, this home sits squarely in prime Bedford Stuyvesant offering the next happy residents tranquility and beauty right here in Brooklyn. Built in the early 1890s in the transitional Neo-Grec/Queen Anne style, this three-story, two-family brownstone has all original details restored to perfection with the addition of top-of-the-line amenities such as zoned central air conditioning and heating, all new mechanicals, modern kitchen and baths, new custom windows, upgraded roof and landscaped garden. 437 MacDonough Street is a prime example of a meticulous restoration balanced with a modern livability. With walls bathed in Farrow & Ball paint, this spectacular color-study beautifully compliments the many architectural details. With its tailored ceiling plasterwork, etched glass, original elegant staircase, fretwork, pocket shutters, pocket doors, five decorative slate mantles, plaster and wood molding, waist-high wainscoting and more — precisely restored original details are showcased on every floor. The open, modern, parlor-floor kitchen is smartly designed to include an abundance of storage camouflaged in sleek, custom-fronted lacquered cabinetry. Natural-stone quartzite with a waterfall edge finishes the striking kitchen island and counters, and beautifully marries the old with the new. Appliances are Bosch, Sub-Zero, and Miele. Walk out from the kitchen to the back deck and into the lovely garden for ideal entertaining or lounging, or simply enjoy the lush view. The landscaped garden is no small asset of this special home. An enormous flowering magnolia sheds a pink glow over the garden and throughout the home in springtime. A custom irrigation system affords easy maintenance so you can spend your time enjoying the flourishing sun garden (with roses, lavender wisteria and more), the verdant shade garden, and two lovely seating areas. Upstairs are two bedrooms, each with an original slate mantle, a walk-in closet and a full en suite bath with custom cabinetry, Duravit, Grohe, and Hansgrohe hardware. The primary bedroom features wallpaper by Jonathan Adler. The garden level is as beautifully restored as the upper two floors and offers flexibility. It is easily transformed into a rental apartment with a separate entrance, or can be used as is for extra sleeping, lounging or home office for a luxurious fully owner-occupied home. An enclave of distinctive Victorian apartments and townhomes, the proposed Stuyvesant East Historic section of Bedford Stuyvesant has maintained the historic integrity of the late nineteenth century. 437 MacDonough Street sits on a tranquil block with mature flowering trees just steps away from Fulton Park. Saraghina restaurant and bakery, Peaches, Chez Oskar, the Michelin-reviewed L’Antagoniste, The Trad Room, Mama Fox, Halsey Traders Market, and many more shops and restaurants are nearby. Multiple bus lines as well as the A/C express train is a very short walk away.

Bedford Stuyvesant | Brooklyn

Quick Profile

Known for its historic brownstones and tight-knit enclave, Bed-Stuy has increasingly left behind its early reputation for being a “bedroom community” and transcended into a highly desirable neighborhood.

Distinct for its aesthetic, it is populated with ornate buildings characterized by cornices, friezes, finials, fluting and other marks of classic architecture. Built up during the period from 1870 to 1900, its historic district runs to the north of Jefferson Avenue, to the east of Malcolm X Boulevard and to the west of Tompkins Avenue.

At one point known as “Brooklyn’s Little Harlem,” the shape of the area has shifted toward attracting a wider demographic of people thanks to the influx of bars, restaurants, antique furniture stores and vintage boutiques. More police enforcement paired with the decline of the crack epidemic at the beginning of the 2000s also opened the door for increased development, as well as the occupation of formerly abandoned buildings and spaces.
