Property Description for 168 Saint Marks Ave

Perched high on the north facing slope of Prospect Heights' grand Saint Marks Avenue is this impeccably maintained two family townhouse measuring an impressive 20' wide by 50' deep on a 100' lot. Size and grandeur are not all this home has to offer as it has been lovingly owned by the same family for over twelve years, with modern mechanicals throughout, as well as a new roof. Beyond the pristine brownstone facade, you will find four floors of unique scale and character. Original hardwood floors throughout and an impressive six original fireplaces, four of which are wood burning, are just the start to the impressive list of features available to the lucky home buyer.

Enter in the grand parlor floor this home is currently configured for one family that used it as two connected duplex apartments. The double parlor floor with 12 foot ceilings has an immense front living room with space for three seating areas all around an enormous wood burning fireplace, the impressive wood mantle piece is originally from the famed Dakota building on Central Park West. The rear parlor is set up as the heart of the home, an eat-in chef's kitchen with 6-burner plus griddle range with double oven, double door GE monogram fridge, dishwasher, and double sink with huge central island facing a stunning marble mantle. French doors open to a large deck with room for a dining table and stairs down to the terraced and landscaped garden with running waterfall and koi pond. The view from the deck is a green wonderland of oversized and private gardens surrounded exclusively by brownstones in every direction. This floor elegantly disguises a beautiful half bathroom, has enormous working pocket doors, 9' windows, and has tons of storage.

Take the internal staircase down to the garden level for the bedroom floor of the lower duplex. Currently set up as three rooms and a windowed full bathroom, there are many uses and configurations possible for the new owner, and there is kitchen plumbing in a wall should one wish to convert it to a triplex over garden rental apartment set up. Each bedroom is king sized with beautiful wood floors, custom closets galore, and a wood burning fireplace in the front room, and a private patio at the rear. There is a vented washer and dryer on this floor. The windowed bathroom has a large soaking tub and shower and extra wide vanity area.

On the third floor are two enormous rooms currently used as a bedroom and combination kitchen and living room for the upper duplex as well as a beautiful white tile windowed full bathroom with stacked laundry unit. There are two gorgeous marble fireplace mantles, square parquet floors, 10.5' foot ceilings, and grand scale window casings with original shutters. The light floods these rooms with sky views from every window. The kitchen is modernized with solid wood cabinets and stainless steel appliances. The owners took great care not to disrupt the moldings and woodwork, making for an easy conversion back to bedrooms should the new owner wish to change the configuration. This living room also has a wood burning fireplace with original marble mantle.

The top floor has three bedrooms, many large closets, three skylights, and a five fixture master bathroom with deep soaking tub, independent walk in shower, double vanity, and a beautiful large window that looks back on the south facing gardens. The north facing windows on the two front bedrooms look out at impressive downtown Brooklyn and Manhattan views, taking full advantage of the grand proportions of this home and its highly elevated position in Prospect Heights. There are original wood floors throughout and built in marble vanity sink in one of the bedrooms along with the fourth working fireplace.

Located just two blocks from Flatbush Avenue and all the conveniences of the 2,3,4,5,N,R,B,D, &Q trains, a short distance to Atlantic Terminal and the LIRR, half a block to Vanderbilt Avenue and all the restaurants there, and a few blocks to Grand Army Plaza entrance to Prospect Park, the Brooklyn Museum, and the Botanic Gardens. All that Brooklyn has to offer is right at your fingertips! This is truly one you have to see to believe.

Prospect Heights | Brooklyn

Quick Profile

Prospect Heights is a small residential neighborhood surrounded by big attractions. It’s rich in culture and offers the perfect blend of old Brooklyn charm and modern-day hipness.

Residents of this tight-knit community include young professionals, families and long-time residents. It’s a walkers paradise - just steps from Prospect Park and a short walking distance to neighborhoods like Downtown Brooklyn, Fort Green and Clinton. You’re close to culture too. Brooklyn Museum, Brooklyn Library, Brooklyn Botanical Garden, Brooklyn Academy of Music and the Barclays Center are all nearby.

Prospect Heights is bordered by Flatbush Avenue to the west, Washington Avenue to the east, Atlantic Avenue and Dean Street to the north and Eastern Parkway to the south.

Prospect Heights, like many areas of New York City, was first inhabited by indigenous tribes and eventually settled by the Dutch and turned into farmland.

A significant part of the Revolutionary War was fought in Prospect Heights and the surrounding areas. Known as the Battle of Brooklyn, it was the first military engagement following the Declaration of Independence. Things didn’t go so well for American forces so they retreated and the British occupied Manhattan for several years after the Battle of Brooklyn.

In 1867, the opening of Prospect Park caused major housing growth in Prospect Heights. The middle-class neighborhood was soon populated by Jewish, Italian, and Irish workers. Many of which were shop-owners or employed as laborers in nearby factories.

Housing in Prospect Heights includes single-family row houses, historic townhouses, co-ops, and new luxury condos. The median listed price for a 1-bedroom in Prospect Heights is $680,000 with an average price per square foot is $944.

The neighborhood's commercial artery runs along Vanderbilt Avenue and Washington Avenue. The variety of businesses adds to the charm of the neighborhood. They include bars, pubs, restaurants and mom-and-pop stores of all types. The shops and eateries are a perfect alternative to the big-name attractions that bracket the neighborhood. It's a little bit of everything in this neighborhood.

Subways are plentiful in Prospect Heights. Its proximity to Manhattan is another perk of the neighborhood. It's about a half-hour train ride. The B, D, N, Q, R, 2, 3, 4 and 5 subway lines all serve the Atlantic Avenue/Barclays Center station. 2, 3, 4, B and Q trains cover the neighborhood and the A and C trains are nearby too.
