Property Description for 296 Halsey Street

> This stunning 1899 townhouse has been beautifully restored and is not to be missed! It was once just an ordinary home that lacked charm and details but has since transitioned into a very stylish and comfortable oasis. The new owners will have the luxury of gracious brownstone living, as well as handsome income. There are three units, an owner's lower duplex and two upper floor two bedroom rentals. > The garden level is quite phenomenal. It has the open plan and features informal dining/seating, a new center-island kitchen with granite countertops, Moen faucet and stainless steel sink. Lighting throughout is great, but here, fixtures by George Kovacs gracefully illuminate the area. At the rear of the kitchen, you will note a large glass door leading to the large fenced-in South-facing garden framed in bluestones coupled by grass. Don't miss the conveniences of modern laundry in addition to the cute powder room on this floor. > There are three bedrooms on the second floor, including the over-sized master suite with fireplace, pretty bathroom and a pass through area that functions well as an office or study area. Note the unusual lighting on this floor; the George Nelson hallway fixture is unusually stylish and enhances the 10' ceilings here. The vestibule showcases wainscoting, and the green and white mosaic tiles were added to complement the original tiles surrounding the fireplace in the master suite. The exterior entrance door was salvaged from a nearby vintage shop. > Upstairs in the third and fourth floor rentals, there are two bedrooms each and both are in good condition. > Located on a nice tree-lined block in the heart of Bedford-Stuyvesant, this home, especially the owner's duplex, has a pleasing style and design quality that addresses every single detail of modern living. In the lower duplex, a new mini-split air conditioning system has been added, and throughout the home, electrical and plumbing has been updated. This home is sure to win over the hearts of the next owners who will be at liberty to move right in.

Quick Profile

Known for its historic brownstones and tight-knit enclave, Bed-Stuy has increasingly left behind its early reputation for being a “bedroom community” and transcended into a highly desirable neighborhood.

Distinct for its aesthetic, it is populated with ornate buildings characterized by cornices, friezes, finials, fluting and other marks of classic architecture. Built up during the period from 1870 to 1900, its historic district runs to the north of Jefferson Avenue, to the east of Malcolm X Boulevard and to the west of Tompkins Avenue.

At one point known as “Brooklyn’s Little Harlem,” the shape of the area has shifted toward attracting a wider demographic of people thanks to the influx of bars, restaurants, antique furniture stores and vintage boutiques. More police enforcement paired with the decline of the crack epidemic at the beginning of the 2000s also opened the door for increased development, as well as the occupation of formerly abandoned buildings and spaces.
