Property Description for 447 East 57th Street, 13-FLR

New Listing! Steps from distinguished Sutton Place, 447 East 57th Street is a beautiful prewar cooperative built in 1928, designed by famed architect Rosario Candela, and its elegant residences boast spectacular architectural detailing, brightly lit rooms and grand floor plans for entertaining. This enormous apartment offers the unique opportunity to occupy the entire 13th Floor - currently configured as a 4 bedroom, 5 bathroom with a staff room/office and TWO large living rooms. One could easily convert the apartment back to its original layout by making two bedrooms out of the Western Living Room.

The thirteen into a ten room apartment has its own private elevator landing. A gracious entry foyer leads into a beautiful and tastefully renovated South facing living room, replete with floor to ceiling French windows, a wood burning fireplace, through wall air conditioning, crown and base moldings, refinished hardwood floors, wainscoting, speakers, and a bar - the perfect room for entertaining. Adjacent to the living room is a large formal dining room which is right off the sunny eat-in-kitchen. The kitchen includes a Sub-Zero refrigerator, two dishwashers, two sinks, a 5 burner stove, a Miele convection oven and microwave, and a U-line wine cooler. There is a staff room/home office with its own bath off of the kitchen.

The corner Master bedroom has delightful French windows from which light streams in, a wood burning fireplace, a bath ensuite, and a walk-in closet. Next to the master and off of the foyer is an adorable den or fourth bedroom. The other bedrooms are all located off their own private gallery. The gallery is lined with closets and bookcases which really give the apartment a sense of grandeur. Both bedrooms have ample closets and baths ensuite. The second staff room has been converted into a windowed laundry room with a sink and extra storage.

447 East 57th Street is a well cared for building with an elegant lobby, 24 hour doorman, live-in super, central laundry and two storage bins come with the apartment. Within easy reach of the subway and cross town bus services getting around town couldn't be easier and in addition to the usual range of neighborhood stores, the new Wholefoods is only a couple of blocks away. Pets and pied-a-terres welcome.

Sutton Place | Manhattan

Quick Profile

Sutton Place is usually described with favorable words like charming, cozy, great neighborhood, hidden gem, sanctuary, or even small village inside a big city. Those descriptions aren’t from real estate folks either, they’re from the people that live and work there, so it must be true.

The quiet and upscale neighborhood is more like an enclave. It’s bounded by East 53rd Street to the south, East 59th Street to the North, First Avenue to the west, and the East River to the east. Most residents will tell you that everything you’ll ever need is located in the neighborhood. When it’s time to venture out into the cityscape, Sutton Place is within easy reach to Midtown and cultural attractions like the Museum of Modern Art, Rockefeller Center, Central Park and other iconic sites.

Manhattan has always had notable celebrity residents. But for unknown reasons, Sutton Place has had more than its share of superstars over the years. Some of the more iconic celebs include: Marilyn Monroe and Arthur Miller, Freddie Mercury, Sigourney Weaver, Joan Crawford, Michael Jackson and sister Latoya (Just for one summer).

Sutton Place is named after Effingham B. Sutton, a shipping merchant and entrepreneur. After hitting it big in the California gold rush, Sutton built brownstones along East 57th and East 58th streets with aspirations of making the section more residential. Poverty and crime dashed his dreams. The street gangs that hung out along the dead-ends and cul-de-sacs added to the neighborhood’s decay. Sutton was about to give up on his development endeavors but the Vanderbilt’s and the Morgan’s showed up in the 1920s and transformed the neighborhood. It soon became a wealthy enclave.
