Property Description for 870 United Nations Plaza, PH37A/38A

High above the glistening East River is one of New York's most remarkable penthouses. This 8 room apartment affords sweeping views South to the New York Harbor and the United Nations restored campus. The spectacular southeast exposure bathes the room in glorious sunshine, merging the interior space with the river and the sky. In the night time, this apartment is magical, from the boat traffic to the UN, to the shimmering lights of midtown Manhattan and Long Island, one feels exhilarated, at home, and in command.

This duplex penthouse, with an interior private elevator and sculpturesque curved staircase, offers extremely spacious rooms with shimmering views of the East River and the city. One first enters into the cove-lit gallery with impressively high ceilings. The living room has two walls of windows facing both South and West, a wood burning fireplace and is connected to both the library and the dining room. This exceptional, custom designed dining room with a wall of south facing windows is currently used as a dual-purpose room for both dining and billiards. The library can be used as such or as an additional guest room. The apartment has four full bedrooms and five and a half bathrooms, including a stunning corner master bedroom suite with wide open South and East exposures. The eat-in kitchen here is truly a professional grade affair with four dishwasher drawers, two freezer drawers, two refrigerator drawers, six burner stovetop, warming drawer, microwave and two commercial wall ovens all seamlessly built-in in stainless steel. The duplex is also served by a second staircase connecting the kitchen and the staff room. No detail was left to chance in this architecturally accomplished home, as materials and colors were selected to reflect the building's surroundings, from the reds of the pre-war buildings to the marble blocks to match those of the United Nations.

The amenities of 870 UN plaza include a very large and well equipped gym on a high floor and a spectacular roof terrace with amazing views including of the four freedoms park. A garage in the building plus a highly trained staff make exiting the city by car convenient and swift. Rarely offered, this penthouse must be seen. Owner will pay all maintenance fees through December 31st, 2017.

Beekman Place | Manhattan

Quick Profile

Beekman Place is less of a neighborhood than it is a quiet two-block enclave just north of the United Nations on the far eastern edge of Turtle Bay. There is only one street that runs through the neighborhood, also called Beekman Place, that wraps itself around 49th Street and 51st Street.

This bucolic little stretch of the east side has always been a cherished spot for those fortunate enough to have found refuge here. The noise and the street traffic from the city surrounds is virtually non-existent as there are no through streets in this neighborhood.

The neighborhood composition largely consists of a few clusters of townhouses and prewar co-ops. The exception to the rule is the charming art-deco-styled Beekman Place Hotel at the corner of First Avenue and 49th Street and the two post-war towers, 860 and 870 UN Plaza that front the grounds of the United Nations.
