Property Description for 903 Sterling Place

Masterfully reimagined to create a sleek contemporary single-family home within stately brownstone bones, this flawless residence offers four bedrooms, three bathrooms and an oversized private yard in a beautiful landmarked section of Crown Heights.

Thoroughly renovated in 2015, this nearly 17-foot-wide townhouse features stunning natural light, a grand scale and a harmonious combination of old and new details. A traditional parlor-level foyer invites you inside a sunny south-facing living room featuring arched windows and a decorative fireplace. At the rear of this level, the striking eat-in kitchen sits beside original stained glass bay windows and exposed brick. Glossy cabinetry and lovely stone countertops surround upscale stainless steel appliances by GE and Bosch, and a banquette seating area welcomes casual dining under designer lighting.

Descend the refurbished original staircase to discover the inviting family room positioned alongside the huge, fenced yard - a blank slate ready to accommodate your urban outdoor space dreams. The large home office with built-in desks and shelving is the perfect spot for working and studying from home. A large bedroom and a stunning bathroom with a walk-in shower surrounded by designer tile complete the garden level.

On the second floor, two extra-large bedrooms flank a modern bathroom with a large tub/shower. A laundry closet includes a Samsung washer-dryer. Above, the exquisite full-floor owner's suite boasts a sprawling bedchamber and a decadent walk-in dressing room filled with custom hanging rods and shelving. The contemporary en suite owner's bath - one of the most beautiful we've seen - features a massive frameless glass walk-in rain shower, a freestanding soaking tub, a private water closet and separate vanity areas with custom millwork and wide mirrors.

This home's extensive renovation included all-new plumbing and electrical and a new boiler and hot water tank in 2015. The cellar offers excellent storage. Multi-zone HVAC ensures year-round comfort, and the handsome, updated facade adds wonderful curb appeal on a lovely tree-lined block.

903 Sterling is a majestic Romanesque/Renaissance Revival brownstone built in 1894. Situated among a row of 15 classic high-stoop townhouses, the home was designed by Swedish architects Magnus Dahlander and Axel Hedman for Faustino Lozano, a prominent cigar manufacturer and tobacco importer/exporter.

This Crown Heights residence is located just inches from fantastic restaurants and nightlife venues. Beloved Prospect Park offers 586 acres of glorious outdoor space and recreation, and the Brooklyn Library, Brooklyn Museum and Children's Museum, and Botanic Garden are all within easy reach. Transportation is a breeze with easy access to the LIRR and A/C, 2/3, 4/5 and Brooklyn Shuttle subway lines, excellent bus service and CitiBike stations all nearby.

Crown Heights | Brooklyn

Quick Profile

Originally known as Crown Hill by the Lenape Indians that lived there, Crown Heights has evolved into a diverse neighborhood, occupied primarily by Hasidic Jews and one of the largest Caribbean populations to be found anywhere outside of the West Indies.

Head over to Nostrand Avenue, one of the main West Indian commercial areas in the neighborhood, which is lined with stores that have been in those exact same places for generations, providing their goods and services to area residents. Kingston Avenue has similar commercial activities that support the Jewish community, and Franklin Avenue shows the most signs of change and gentrification, with an ever-expanding mix of yoga studios, coffee shops, and organic grocery stores that serve the influx of young professionals. No matter which of these areas you visit, you will find an interesting mix of businesses that you wouldn’t normally picture as existing side-by-side. It is all part of the cultural diversity of Crown Heights.

The neighborhood is bisected, from east to west, by Eastern Parkway, which is a beautiful, 3-mile-long boulevard lined with mature trees. This leafy oasis was designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, famed designer of Central Park, the Biltmore Estate in North Carolina, and the U. S. Capitol in Washington, D. C.

You will find a mix of low-rise apartment buildings, large middle-class elevator buildings, brownstones, and some luxury buildings. Century-old architecture stands next to modern residential developments in a visually interesting mix of styles, much as the diversity of the residents exists. People who would not normally meet and mix are forging new pathways to cultural understanding by working, living, and playing together in the same neighborhood.
