Property Description for 754 Madison Street

754 Madison is an exceptionally charming two family, three story, extra wide townhouse that blends restored original details with new mechanicals and a dreamy south facing backyard and breakfast deck. Set up as a 3BR/ 2.5BA upper owners duplex, with a smart 2BR garden rental below, you can offset your monthlies with a high rental income or keep the whole house for yourself. Also note that there's a full finished basement accessible to both units and extra low annual taxes of $3110.

Up the stoop to owners duplex, through the brand new custom solid wood doors, you come into the grand parlor floor which is used as expansive living and dining space. Restored original details in this room include stately wainscoting, a regal fireplace mantel and surround, stained glass window transoms, beautiful window and door frames, and an elegant staircase with intricate spindles and banisters. A spacious and modern eat-in kitchen lies beyond a pair of French doors and you will spend hours in the sunny and comfortable built-in breakfast nook with custom seating overlooking your enchanting rear garden. The kitchen leads out onto a private breakfast deck and is equipped with herringbone tile floors, marble countertops, an island, custom cabinetry, an arabesque tile backsplash, and a suite of high-end stainless steel appliances. A powder room with a washer/dryer finishes the parlor level.

The upper level of the duplex features three bedrooms and two full bathrooms. The central landing is anchored by a pair of skylights and an exposed brick wall and brings you to a library or home office. The primary bedroom has two large closets, restored window shutters, as well as a pristine en-suite bathroom with marble walls, a heated towel rack, a claw-foot bathtub, and a window overlooking the backyard. The remaining two bedrooms share easy access to a full bathroom that has its own skylight.

The garden level rental unit has a private entrance, 2 bedrooms, 1 bathroom, a washer/dryer, and direct yard access (if you want to share!). The living space features an exposed brick wall, while the kitchen boasts stainless steel appliances and high-end finishes. Each bedroom maintains a comfortable level of privacy thanks to a split-wing layout.

Nestled on a quiet tree-lined street in Bedford-Stuyvesant, 754 Madison is close to a number of restaurants, grocery stores, cafes, and shops, and is only a few blocks away from the J/M/Z subway lines. Reinaldo Salgado Playground and park is on the corner.

Quick Profile

Known for its historic brownstones and tight-knit enclave, Bed-Stuy has increasingly left behind its early reputation for being a “bedroom community” and transcended into a highly desirable neighborhood.

Distinct for its aesthetic, it is populated with ornate buildings characterized by cornices, friezes, finials, fluting and other marks of classic architecture. Built up during the period from 1870 to 1900, its historic district runs to the north of Jefferson Avenue, to the east of Malcolm X Boulevard and to the west of Tompkins Avenue.

At one point known as “Brooklyn’s Little Harlem,” the shape of the area has shifted toward attracting a wider demographic of people thanks to the influx of bars, restaurants, antique furniture stores and vintage boutiques. More police enforcement paired with the decline of the crack epidemic at the beginning of the 2000s also opened the door for increased development, as well as the occupation of formerly abandoned buildings and spaces.
