Property Description for 51 Jay Street, PH-E

There is only one Penthouse in all of Brooklyn like this, and it won't last! PHE at 51 Jay in Dumbo is a spectacular 3016 SF townhouse in the sky, offering an indoor deeded PARKING SPACE, 4 beds, 4.5 baths, and a 2764 SF double decker terrace with city, bridge and skyline views. This truly unrivaled home is the cherry on top of a distinctive Dumbo warehouse that was converted in 2016 into 74 luxury homes in the historic waterfront neighborhood of Dumbo. Designed by ODA Architects, this corner Penthouse is a glass-enclosed addition to a distinctive historic building with two light-filled and airy exposures looking West and South. You are guaranteed to enjoy incredible light all day, in addition to breathtaking sunsets, through two extensive walls of striking floor-to-ceiling blackened steel casement windows that allow both visual and physical access to your private terraces from every single room in the apartment. The main level on the 6th floor is the larger of the two floors and offers an incredible entertaining space of loft-like proportions with an open chef's kitchen, an oversized living room, and an unexpectedly large area for a capacious dining table. An easy flow to the outdoor space from the indoor space is guaranteed, requires no stairs, and allows the space outside to act as the perfect backdrop for indoor viewing even when the weather won't cooperate. Add a few outdoor heaters and you can enjoy this vast terrace all year round for playing, entertaining, meditating, and gardening. Two additional bedrooms on this level are both ensuite, with the primary bedroom in the back offering a large custom Henry Built closet and a quiet and contemplative view of your very own private terrace area. The second bedroom is also quite large and makes a fantastic guest suite or home office. An elegant powder room, plus a large vented laundry room and unexpectedly spacious and practical pantry are just some of the additional surprises that you will find on this level. Head up an easy yet dramatic double height staircase to the second floor where two additional bedrooms await, both with their own ensuite baths, in addition to oversized casement doors that walkout to the upper terrace area. The views from upstairs are even more epic than down below, and offer an unprecedented bird's eye view of lower Manhattan. This perfect townhouse-like layout is complemented by a suite of high-end finishes throughout including a multi-zoned heating and cooling system, automated electric shades in every room, unique herringbone floors of fumed oak that perfectly mirror the industrial casement windows and brick facade of the original building. In keeping with the industrial elegance, the architect chose a dramatic palette of marbles and woods throughout. An oversized chef's kitchen features a 12' island of honed La Rochelle Gris marble, perfect for prep and hanging out, Aster Cucine cabinetry with blackened hardware and the perfect patina, and a suite of Gaggenau appliances including a 5-burner cooktop, convection range, 42" fridge, wine cooler and microwave drawer. The 5-fixture primary bathroom includes an earthy palette of brown and gray marbles, a double vanity, a deep soaking tub and walk-in glass-enclosed shower, and a floor-to-ceiling inset medicine cabinet with brass accents. Additional bathrooms are all perfectly executed with nickel hardware, tundra gray honed marble, oak vanities, and basalt porcelain tiles. 51 Jay Street offers an impressive array of amenities including a full-time doorman, package room, cold storage, a fitness and yoga room, children's playroom, rooftop terrace with grill and fireplace, landscaped courtyard, bike storage, and pet wash. The F train at High Street is right outside your door, as is the award-winning Brooklyn Bridge Park, the Ferry stop, and a vast array of award-winning restaurants and shops. The current owners also purchased an indoor parking space at 205 Water street, directly across the street from 51 Jay, that will convey with the unit, for the ultimate convenience. Who needs a street-level townhouse when you can have a penthouse with all of the indoor and outdoor space, amazing light, privacy and security just one quick ride over the bridge to Manhattan, with better views and more greenspace than you could ever imagine. Basement storage unit also included.

Dumbo | Brooklyn

Quick Profile

DUMBO, which is an acronym for Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass, used to be a lively industrial and manufacturing zone, full of large factories and warehouses. These buildings have now been converted into expansive lofts, theaters, galleries, and office spaces for start-up companies. These larger residential spaces are attractive to families and creative artists and writers who need space to dream and create.

DUMBO was named in 1978 as a sort of reverse marketing ploy to try to keep people from swarming into the area, attracted by the quaint tree-lined streets, elegant historic brownstones, large lofts, and views of Lower Manhattan. It was felt that this influx of people would change the nature of the neighborhood. It was hoped that by giving the area a ridiculous name, nobody would want to live there.

Many of the neighborhood’s bars, hotels, and restaurants capitalize on the stunning waterfront views and the Manhattan skyline in the background. Interesting and fun cultural events are held under and around the Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges that connect DUMBO to Manhattan. One of these is the annual Oktoberfest.

With beautiful vignettes of the Manhattan and Brooklyn Bridges being framed around every corner, DUMBO provides residents and tourists with charming, and often surprising, views. Because the neighborhood is eminently walkable and filled with unique shops, it feels like a small town on the edge of a major urban waterfront. Once people move to DUMBO, they tend to stay and become involved in the community.
