Property Description for 436 West 20th Street

Built in 1835, this 25 wide, five-story mansion was built in the Greek Revival Style and is one of the
oldest houses on one of New Yorks very finest historic blocks. Currently configured as five elegant, floor-through apartments, the house could be converted back to a private residence.

The sweeping staircase embraces the interior while artisan-crafted moldings and medallions decorate
the walls and ceilings. Ten wood-burning fireplaces, hand-carved mantle pieces and original
wide-plank floors are a testament to forgotten times.

Perfectly located in West Chelsea across from The Close (the picturesque gardens of the General
Theological Seminary) the house is minutes away from Chelsea Piers, The Highline and Hudson River
Park.

Each of the five apartments offer large, open living spaces, high ceilings, wood burning fireplaces,
crown moldings, tons of storage, Bosch Washers and Dryers, and sound proofing. Each kitchen
features Viking Stoves and Wine Coolers and Liebherr Refrigerators. Four of the apartments
are 1,800 square feet, while the apartment on the parlor floor is 1,700 square feet.

The garden apartment features a private entrance, three bathrooms, a wider floor plate, and a private
rear yard, the penthouse has a private elevator and features 18-foot-high ceilings, skylights, a
mezzanine sleeping area with two bedrooms, a rooftop garden with views of the Skyline and
Hudson River, and a large roof deck.

A wealthy merchant named John N. Smith purchased the land for 436 West 20th St. from
Clement Clarke Moore, author of A Visit from St. Nicholas, who divided this section of his s
Chelsea estate into lots in 1834 as the rapidly growing city pushed northward. In 1962, actress
Frances Gaar purchased the house and rented rooms in her townhouse to many artists and
celebrities. Once called the Chelsea Mansion, it has a colorful and storied history.

Quick Profile

The row houses portray the world-class architecture of Greek Revival, Italianate and Georgian styles. The population is both ethnically and socially diverse, which is reflected in the restaurants and retail businesses in the neighborhood.

Western Chelsea is the center of the NYC art world, where you will find more than 200 art galleries housed in rehabbed factories and warehouses, as well as in newly-constructed buildings.

While people of many different cultures call Chelsea home, it has been a mecca over the years for people in the LGBTQ community. One census reported that as many as 22% of its residents were gay couples. Eighth Avenue is a trendy area for LGBTQ-oriented dining and shopping. Although it no longer draws the LGBTQ population that it once did, Chelsea still has many popular alternative bars.

Chelsea is primarily residential, consisting of a mixture of diverse complexes, low-rise apartment blocks, tenements, townhouses, renovated row houses, and luxury high-rises.

Chelsea is an interesting and sought-after place to live, with unique clothing boutiques, restaurants, and delis representing cultures from around the world. In addition to its quirky establishments, Chelsea has fine dining restaurants and a vibrant, hip nightlife, which adds to its allure.

Chelsea is well-served by public transportation. At least six city bus routes traverse Chelsea. There are three NYC subway routes with stops on Seventh Avenue, three on Eighth Avenue, and two more on Sixth Avenue. The 34th Street - Hudson Yards Station opened in 2015 with its main entrance in Chelsea.
