Property Description for 410 East 57th Street, 11-A

Prewar elegance and grand proportions define this sprawling three-bedroom, three-bathroom Classic 7 residence in a white-glove Sutton Place cooperative. Spanning a decadent 2,200 square feet, this refined home begins with a long gallery foyer that nods to the sophistication found throughout. Soaring beamed ceilings rise overhead, handsome herringbone hardwood floors run underfoot, and multiple closets effortlessly attend to storage needs. The oversized living room invites you to relax in front of the warm wood-burning fireplace while French doors reveal a bedroom currently used as a study. Pocket doors open to a lavish formal dining room, and the extra-large eat-in kitchen boasts abundant cabinet space, a breakfast bar and upscale stainless steel appliances, including a Sub-Zero refrigerator, gas range, double wall ovens and a dishwasher. Head to the corner owner's suite to find northern and eastern exposures, two walk-in California closets and an en suite marble bathroom with a relaxing jetted tub/shower. A third bedroom shares a smart Jack-and-Jill bath with the study, and a flex room is currently used as a bedroom suite with a private bath. This expansive, adaptable floor plan could easily revert to its original Classic 7 layout, with a sprawling dining room and staff room, if desired (see alternate floor plan). Handsome built-in cabinetry, through-the-wall air conditioners and a large laundry room with a side-by-side washer-dryer add effortless ease to this graceful residence. 410 East 57th Street is a handsome brick-and-limestone apartment house built in 1928 and converted to cooperative use in 1961. Today's residents enjoy full-time doorman service, elevator attendants, a live-in superintendent, fitness center, resident storage, bike room, a quaint common garden and mail service directly to their doorsteps. Pets, pieds-à-terre and co-purchasing permitted with approval. Sutton Place is one of New York City's most desirable enclaves offering both residential tranquility and spectacular convenience. Great dining and shopping, including Whole Foods, line the local streets, and this home offers fantastic proximity to Midtown, the U.N. and prestigious medical institutions. Enjoy miles of uninterrupted waterfront along East River Promenade plus effortless access to public transit with N/Q/R/W, 4/5/6, E and M/F trains, ample bus service and CitiBike stations nearby.

Sutton Place | Manhattan

Quick Profile

Sutton Place is usually described with favorable words like charming, cozy, great neighborhood, hidden gem, sanctuary, or even small village inside a big city. Those descriptions aren’t from real estate folks either, they’re from the people that live and work there, so it must be true.

The quiet and upscale neighborhood is more like an enclave. It’s bounded by East 53rd Street to the south, East 59th Street to the North, First Avenue to the west, and the East River to the east. Most residents will tell you that everything you’ll ever need is located in the neighborhood. When it’s time to venture out into the cityscape, Sutton Place is within easy reach to Midtown and cultural attractions like the Museum of Modern Art, Rockefeller Center, Central Park and other iconic sites.

Manhattan has always had notable celebrity residents. But for unknown reasons, Sutton Place has had more than its share of superstars over the years. Some of the more iconic celebs include: Marilyn Monroe and Arthur Miller, Freddie Mercury, Sigourney Weaver, Joan Crawford, Michael Jackson and sister Latoya (Just for one summer).

Sutton Place is named after Effingham B. Sutton, a shipping merchant and entrepreneur. After hitting it big in the California gold rush, Sutton built brownstones along East 57th and East 58th streets with aspirations of making the section more residential. Poverty and crime dashed his dreams. The street gangs that hung out along the dead-ends and cul-de-sacs added to the neighborhood’s decay. Sutton was about to give up on his development endeavors but the Vanderbilt’s and the Morgan’s showed up in the 1920s and transformed the neighborhood. It soon became a wealthy enclave.
