Property Description for 228 Baltic Street

On a leafy block in coveted Cobble Hill sits 228 Baltic St: a regal single family home with original moldings, grand central staircase, gracious parlors, renovated chef's kitchen, and a lush garden. The first floor entrance leads into a foyer which draws your eye straight past the period moldings into garden in the rear. A formal dining room has an oversized window onto Baltic and enough room for an 8-10 person dining table. This leads into the chef's open kitchen, with a stunning Viking range, marble countertops, Shaker-style cabinetry, and bar seating. Off the kitchen is a living room with built-ins, perfect for a home library, and three French doors leading to the deck. The outdoor space feels like a step out of the city. The deck has enough room for a grill and seating, and steps down into a masterfully landscaped garden, full of mature greenery, lush hydrangea bushes, and a manicured lawn and paved dining area. Up the spiral staircase is a gorgeous parlor floor with soaring ceiling heights, two massive living and entertaining spaces, and a landing area with a dry bar. The front living room has massive windows overlooking Baltic, while the rear living space has French doors to Juliet balconies overlooking the garden. Both rooms have stunning, marble Italianate wood-burning fireplaces. The top floor features an ornate period skylight, a primary bedroom with a walk-in closet and built-in office, a second rear-facing bedroom, and a third bedroom currently used as a nursery. A large marble bathroom with its own skylight sits in the center of this floor, with beautiful original details and a built-in linen closet. The home also has a full English basement with a mudroom entry, two large storage and mechanical rooms, a renovated full bath, a laundry room, and a massive living space replete with built-ins. This room has glass doors leading to the beautiful garden. 228 Baltic is in a prime location, right by Cobble Hill Park, Cobble Hill Cinemas, and the area's best bars, shops, and restaurants, like La Vara, June, FishTales, and Poppy's. The Bergen F/G trains are moments away.

Cobble Hill | Brooklyn

Quick Profile

The neighborhood now known as Cobble Hill was originally settled by Dutch farmers in the mid-1600s. Tucked along the East River, in the heart of Brooklyn, Cobble Hill is known for its welcoming, leafy streets, independent mom-and-pop shops, and 19th century brownstones.

Most of Cobble Hill lies within an historic landmark district, and building heights are restricted to 50 feet, which helps maintain its 19th century atmosphere. Building owners will often split the use of their four- or five-story buildings, occupying several of the top floors and renting out the ground floor as apartments or, conversely, occupying one or more of the lower floors and renting out the top floors. New construction and alterations to existing buildings in the historic district require approval by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission, which helps maintain the historic character of the Cobble Hill neighborhood.

Although most housing in Cobble Hill consists of traditional brownstones and brick townhouses,, you will also find churches that have been converted to condos, carriage houses that have become luxury apartments and Victorian school houses that have been converted into lofts.

Court Street and Atlantic Avenue are the main commercial streets in the neighborhood. You will find popular Middle Eastern restaurants on Atlantic Avenue. Court Street is home to casual restaurants, many with outdoor seating, relaxed cafes and hip bars.

Many young professionals and families live in the brownstones, townhouses, and single-family homes that line the leafy streets. Cobble Hill is a great place to live if you work on Wall Street, as you can walk over the Brooklyn Bridge to work.
