Property Description for 5 Great Jones Street, 2-FLR

Just Listed! Rare opportunity to own and occupy this truly original historic home - an authentic and peaceful Great Jones St. loft with grand-scale proportions, respectfully preserved classic loft-era details, and plenty of room to breathe. Truly something special. If you are tired of seeing the fully modernized & whitewashed narrow-box lofts with high maintenance on the market, this wide and serene 2300+ ft. loft with 14' ceilings is exactly the home you have been waiting for. Rich in history, this extraordinary loft was once home to the legendary jazz musician Charles Mingus as well as to Kermit Love (creator of Big Bird, Mr. Snuffleupagus, Oscar the Grouch + Cookie Monster).

The current owners refinished and preserved all original details during their renovation process, while adding the few vital upgrades needed for comfortable modern living. Currently built as a 2 bedroom/2 bathroom (with massive 1000 ft. master suite) + mezzanine home-office/media room, this loft offers countless possible configuration options. Features in this remarkably tranquil home include: ductless C/A/C system, in-loft W/D laundry room, 1 working WBFP with 2 decorative FP's (one of which can easily become active), soaring ceilings up to 14' high, original refinished wood flooring + pressed-tin ceilings, original claw-foot tubs, vintage French cast-iron radiators, high-end appliances seamlessly integrated into the loft's elegant vintage design, D/W + garbage disposal, custom oversized (sound-proofed) windows, intelligent custom design elements, and an incredible amount of dedicated storage (including a giant storage cage in the basement). Architecturally striking, this loft also features exposed refinished wood joists + brick, has a slightly elevated formal living room with treetop views, and offers entry/exit at either end of the home. The extremely low maintenance here makes this bright, quiet and spacious home even more exceptional and desirable.

5 Great Jones is a well-managed intimate and discreet boutique bldg. with very solid financials (C/O in place and the co-op has no mortgage), very reasonable co-op policies, video intercom, and a beautiful Federal-style staircase. Such a stellar location needs no introduction - - Great Jones Street is without question the premier A+ block in the Greenwich Village/Noho loft scene, as evidenced in the gorgeous architecture, high quality of life, and property value retention + growth. The few local buildings such as 5 Great Jones which retain these authentic elements possess a certain sense of peace, character, and solid quality of life simply not found in newer neighbors. Please note: this is a walk-up building, though our loft is only a 1/2 flight of stairs up (essentially identical to a brownstone front stoop walk-up). Showings by appointment only.

Noho | Manhattan

Quick Profile

NoHo, an acronym for North of Houston, is a trendy neighborhood with expansive lofts, chic shops, and hip eateries. It was once part of Greenwich Village, but as New York City changes and coolness always redefines itself, the neighborhood, which is more like a small nook, has morphed into a happening secession of its own.

Like many New York City neighborhoods, the boundaries are subjective and the exact location always depends on who you ask. Generally, NoHo is understood to be bounded by East Eighth Street to the north, East Houston Street to the south, Bowery Street to the east (which becomes Cooper Square north of East Fourth Street), and Broadway to the west.

It’s hard to believe that NoHo was once a sketchy no-man’s land with more than its share of dilapidated structures. These gentrified days, it’s a healthy mix of older buildings, renovated warehouses and newer construction by iconic architects. For such a small area, NoHo has three historic districts that cover much of the neighborhood.

Broadway, Bowery, and Lafayette is the business district of the neighborhood. You’ll find it all in this neck of the woods. From trendy one of a kind retailers to popular brand stores. It rivals its SoHo neighbor in places to shop.

Architecture buffs get your walking shoes on. There are many historical and modern buildings throughout the neighborhood. Colonnade Row, the Cable Building, and the Schermerhorn Building are just a few of the many notable buildings you’ll find.
