This well-configured one bedroom plus home office offers an opportunity to live in the much sought after Sweeney Building, a historic, landmarked full-service condominium in Brooklyn’s beautiful waterfront enclave, DUMBO. Boasting 11 foot ceiling heights, hardwood floors, beamed ceilings and enormous windows, this southern facing apartment offers a quintessential loft living experience. The over-sized master bedroom offers an ensuite master bath with basketweave marble tiling, a whirlpool tub, separate shower and double sinks. The stainless steel chef’s kitchen contains top of the line appliances, there is a generously proportioned laundry room, and ample closet space. The massive concrete construction provides whisper quiet living. Located in the DUMBO Historic District, the Sweeney Building was constructed in 1908 in the Neo-Classical Industrial style by the W.H. Sweeney Manufacturing Corp. — makers of metal kitchenware. Converted to residential condominium use in 2003, today’s residents enjoy full-time doorman service, an expansive fitness center, furnished roof deck with shimmering water views, storage cages and bike room. Honest Network provides free WiFi with speeds that top FIOS. Just a block from Brooklyn Bridge Park, you’ll have a front-row seat to gorgeous waterfront open space, jaw-dropping views and endless recreation. The fantastic Empire Stores and St. Ann’s Warehouse deliver world-class shopping and entertainment, while the local dining scene features great spots for seafood, French and Italian cuisine. A/C, F, 2/3, R and 4/5 trains, plus the Fulton ferry landing provide effortless access to the rest of the city.

Dumbo | Brooklyn

Quick Profile

DUMBO, which is an acronym for Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass, used to be a lively industrial and manufacturing zone, full of large factories and warehouses. These buildings have now been converted into expansive lofts, theaters, galleries, and office spaces for start-up companies. These larger residential spaces are attractive to families and creative artists and writers who need space to dream and create.

DUMBO was named in 1978 as a sort of reverse marketing ploy to try to keep people from swarming into the area, attracted by the quaint tree-lined streets, elegant historic brownstones, large lofts, and views of Lower Manhattan. It was felt that this influx of people would change the nature of the neighborhood. It was hoped that by giving the area a ridiculous name, nobody would want to live there.

Many of the neighborhood’s bars, hotels, and restaurants capitalize on the stunning waterfront views and the Manhattan skyline in the background. Interesting and fun cultural events are held under and around the Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges that connect DUMBO to Manhattan. One of these is the annual Oktoberfest.

With beautiful vignettes of the Manhattan and Brooklyn Bridges being framed around every corner, DUMBO provides residents and tourists with charming, and often surprising, views. Because the neighborhood is eminently walkable and filled with unique shops, it feels like a small town on the edge of a major urban waterfront. Once people move to DUMBO, they tend to stay and become involved in the community.
