Property Description for 121 West 20th Street, 3-E

The loft at 121 West 20th Street #3E is a stunner. This rare, pre-war condominium home is one of a very few authentic lofts remaining in Chelsea. You will be wowed by the grand proportions and sheer volume from the minute you enter. This 1884 square foot duplex open plan space is over 27 feet wide with enormous windows reaching 14 feet to the ceiling and two sets of French doors with Juliet balconies facing north. You'll appreciate the authentic detail on the original iron columns, the gas fireplace that serves as the centerpiece of the main floor, the creative lighting, industrial metal accents and dramatic angular structure of the mezzanine level.

The newly renovated, open chef's kitchen is complete with a Fisher Paykel Stainless Steel French door refrigerator, double drawer dishwasher, and a Bosch stove and cooktop. Copious cabinets and pantries, under-counter and recessed lighting, and a large breakfast bar flow seamlessly into the enormous dining area that fits a table for ten and then some.

The breathtaking main room is currently being used as a living area on one side of the fireplace and an open concept master suite behind it. The bedroom has a lounge and dressing area with many closets and an ensuite bath with jacuzzi tub and standing shower as well as a washer and dryer.

Beside the powder room and up a straight stairway is the delightful mezzanine level. With a ceiling height of 6'3", this huge, lofted space has a second sleeping area large enough for a king bed, a home office and even a den. Also up here, a magical "window seat", another full bath and so many closets and built-in shelving that make this not only a storage haven but architecturally unique.

Aside from the authentic details and the proportions, much of the beauty of this space is in what you can create. Live in it as is - an open and airy nod to the cast iron warehouses of the past, or let it grow with you, into a more traditional two or even a three plus bedroom home if you so desire. For a two plus bedroom possibility, see the alternate plan.

121 West 20th Street condominium is a low-key building with 5 stories and a lovely, recently renovated roof deck. A part-time doorman, full time super and a bike room are at your service, and private storage comes with the purchase. Poised on the cusp of Chelsea and the Flatiron district, 121 West 20th Street is convenient to the historic Ladies' Mile shopping, and with Trader Joe's and Whole Foods just blocks away, you won't have to drag groceries far. Live in the midst of the top dining, parks, gyms and entertainment of both neighborhoods and adjacent to most major subway lines. We'll need at least 24 hours' notice for all showings and proof of vaccination at scheduling.

Quick Profile

The row houses portray the world-class architecture of Greek Revival, Italianate and Georgian styles. The population is both ethnically and socially diverse, which is reflected in the restaurants and retail businesses in the neighborhood.

Western Chelsea is the center of the NYC art world, where you will find more than 200 art galleries housed in rehabbed factories and warehouses, as well as in newly-constructed buildings.

While people of many different cultures call Chelsea home, it has been a mecca over the years for people in the LGBTQ community. One census reported that as many as 22% of its residents were gay couples. Eighth Avenue is a trendy area for LGBTQ-oriented dining and shopping. Although it no longer draws the LGBTQ population that it once did, Chelsea still has many popular alternative bars.

Chelsea is primarily residential, consisting of a mixture of diverse complexes, low-rise apartment blocks, tenements, townhouses, renovated row houses, and luxury high-rises.

Chelsea is an interesting and sought-after place to live, with unique clothing boutiques, restaurants, and delis representing cultures from around the world. In addition to its quirky establishments, Chelsea has fine dining restaurants and a vibrant, hip nightlife, which adds to its allure.

Chelsea is well-served by public transportation. At least six city bus routes traverse Chelsea. There are three NYC subway routes with stops on Seventh Avenue, three on Eighth Avenue, and two more on Sixth Avenue. The 34th Street - Hudson Yards Station opened in 2015 with its main entrance in Chelsea.
