Property Description for 400 East 56th Street, 10-E

New to market in the highly desirable Plaza 400, one of Sutton Place's most sought after, amenity-rich buildings, is this bright and spacious 1-bedroom (flex 2-bedroom), 2 bathroom residence.

Currently configured as a large Junior-4 with two baths, Apartment 10E presents a highly desirable E-line layout that affords the flexibility of converting into a functional 2 bedroom. Features include a versatile entry foyer, dining area, gracious living room spanning 23' with five oversized west-facing windows, and hardwood parquet floors.

A galley kitchen adjacent to the living room has all the appliances one could wish for and offers a separate entry for deliveries. A closet-lined hallway leads to the primary bedroom which comfortably accommodates king-size furniture and features an ensuite bathroom and large walk-in closet.

Greatly prized among layouts in the building, the 'E-line affords the flexibility of two-bedroom conversion. We have included an alternate floor plan for illustrative purposes.

Designed by the notable mid-century modern architect Philip Birnbaum, constructed in 1968 and converted to cooperative in 1981, Plaza 400 is a 40-story, 581-unit impeccably self-managed luxury property in the Sutton Place neighborhood of Midtown East with spacious homes, strong financials, and a comprehensive suite of amenities and services. The Skytop rooftop pool and terraces offer endless 360 city and East River views. Fully staffed, Skytop offers chaise lounges with umbrellas, tables, and chairs for summer enjoyment. The fitness center is equipped with a full range of free weights, treadmills/elliptical machines, and training equipment. Quality commercial tenants include a cafe, optician, dry cleaner, nail salon, Pilates studio, children's school/daycare, and medical offices. Sutton Place | Manhattan

Quick Profile

Sutton Place is usually described with favorable words like charming, cozy, great neighborhood, hidden gem, sanctuary, or even small village inside a big city. Those descriptions aren’t from real estate folks either, they’re from the people that live and work there, so it must be true.

The quiet and upscale neighborhood is more like an enclave. It’s bounded by East 53rd Street to the south, East 59th Street to the North, First Avenue to the west, and the East River to the east. Most residents will tell you that everything you’ll ever need is located in the neighborhood. When it’s time to venture out into the cityscape, Sutton Place is within easy reach to Midtown and cultural attractions like the Museum of Modern Art, Rockefeller Center, Central Park and other iconic sites.

Manhattan has always had notable celebrity residents. But for unknown reasons, Sutton Place has had more than its share of superstars over the years. Some of the more iconic celebs include: Marilyn Monroe and Arthur Miller, Freddie Mercury, Sigourney Weaver, Joan Crawford, Michael Jackson and sister Latoya (Just for one summer).

Sutton Place is named after Effingham B. Sutton, a shipping merchant and entrepreneur. After hitting it big in the California gold rush, Sutton built brownstones along East 57th and East 58th streets with aspirations of making the section more residential. Poverty and crime dashed his dreams. The street gangs that hung out along the dead-ends and cul-de-sacs added to the neighborhood’s decay. Sutton was about to give up on his development endeavors but the Vanderbilt’s and the Morgan’s showed up in the 1920s and transformed the neighborhood. It soon became a wealthy enclave.
