Property Description for 455 West 24th Street

Not often is a house individually designated as historically important by the NYC Landmarks Preservation Commission but that accolade has been bestowed on the single family home at 455 West 24th Street. One of a row of mid-19th Century houses on the North side of West 24th Street near Tenth Avenue, the handsome 15' deep front garden of this Greek Revival beauty hints that there is something special here. The 2009 renovation was also a restoration of the most important period details of this home. Included in the work were a new elevator, a rear addition, all new plumbing and electric, a Lutron lighting system, video surveillance, multi-zoned heat/cooling systems, a magnificent chef's kitchen and an elegant master on the entire 3rd floor. There are 3 additional bedrooms on the 4th floor.

FIRST FLOOR
Front Garden - Wrought iron fencing encircles the entire front entrance. The gate leads to the bluestone walk past the full width garden with Birch tree and a sprawl of climbing ivy.

Kitchen and Formal Dining - Easy understoop entry leads to the 14' x 23' formal dining room at the front of the house and a hallway leads to the rear kitchen. Any chef will be pleased with the over 36' of counter space, a Wolf 6-burner gas stove and oven, a separate Wolf electric wall oven and warming drawer, 6 Sub-Zero refrigerator/freezer drawers, 2 Bosch dishwashers, a microwave, 3 double wide pantries. At the rear of the kitchen is a powder room and laundry room. French glass doors open to the garden. The floor in the kitchen is heated.

Garden - I would guess one of Manhattan's oldest privately owned London Plane trees (30" diameter) is here, and is still thriving. The neighboring gardens are also lovingly maintained giving this house a park-like setting rarely found in Manhattan. This is a nearly 600 square foot garden with fabulous sun, ample lighting and lush greenery. There is a watering system, a barbecue and gas heating fixtures for winter dining.

PARLOR FLOOR
Entrance - From the front walkway there is a stone stoop. The still-working original pull-doorbell is here, a set of original painted wood outer doors with glass transoms, and a matching set of inner doors. There are period lighting fixtures here and more throughout the house.

Living Room and Study - Much original detail has been restored including the intricately woven crown moldings, cast iron radiators, gilded chandeliers on plaster escutcheons, two sets of French glass doors. Both rooms have gas fireplaces with original mantles. Attached to the study is a handsome wet bar, a private office, and a powder room. There is a pleasant secluded terrace 8' x 10' overlooking the garden.

THIRD FLOOR
Master Bedroom - The primary bedroom occupies the entire floor with sleeping quarters in the quiet rear of the house and study/reading room in the front of the house. The master bath has a heated floor, a 72" claw-foot soaking tub, and marble surfaces. There is a large walk in closet. The front study has a wall of custom bookcases, all lighted and glass fronted.

FOURTH FLOOR
Three Bedrooms - Each of the 3 bedrooms here have comfortable dimensions, one has an enormous walk-in closet. The bedrooms share one bath.

The elevator services all 4 floors, there is a 600 square foot storage area in the cellar, soundproof windows, and Crestron sound system. This is a turn-key home in the best Chelsea location, convenient to The Avenue School, Hudson Yards, Google, Facebook, Amazon and Twitter, fine dining and entertainment venues, and Hudson River Park. A parking garage is directly across the street.

Chelsea | Manhattan

Quick Profile

The row houses portray the world-class architecture of Greek Revival, Italianate and Georgian styles. The population is both ethnically and socially diverse, which is reflected in the restaurants and retail businesses in the neighborhood.

Western Chelsea is the center of the NYC art world, where you will find more than 200 art galleries housed in rehabbed factories and warehouses, as well as in newly-constructed buildings.

While people of many different cultures call Chelsea home, it has been a mecca over the years for people in the LGBTQ community. One census reported that as many as 22% of its residents were gay couples. Eighth Avenue is a trendy area for LGBTQ-oriented dining and shopping. Although it no longer draws the LGBTQ population that it once did, Chelsea still has many popular alternative bars.

Chelsea is primarily residential, consisting of a mixture of diverse complexes, low-rise apartment blocks, tenements, townhouses, renovated row houses, and luxury high-rises.

Chelsea is an interesting and sought-after place to live, with unique clothing boutiques, restaurants, and delis representing cultures from around the world. In addition to its quirky establishments, Chelsea has fine dining restaurants and a vibrant, hip nightlife, which adds to its allure.

Chelsea is well-served by public transportation. At least six city bus routes traverse Chelsea. There are three NYC subway routes with stops on Seventh Avenue, three on Eighth Avenue, and two more on Sixth Avenue. The 34th Street - Hudson Yards Station opened in 2015 with its main entrance in Chelsea.
