Property Description for 25 Sutton Place, 4-FLR

Situated on Sutton Place in one of Rosario Candela's finest buildings this exquisite 9-room home was decorated by renowned AD 100 interior designer, Markham Roberts, who created individually layered spaces with rich wall coverings and finishes in a youthful classic style in tandem with Candela's refined architecture. Entry to this spacious, full floor, 3 bedroom residence is through a private elevator landing with Indian block print fabric and contrasting borders leading to the larger entertaining rooms. The expansive corner living room, with richly stained oak floors, is centered around the wood-burning fireplace with its Neo-classical marble mantel. Dramatic high gloss navy lacquered walls reflect sunlight from five over-sized windows facing south and west. A pair of mahogany doors, original to the apartment, open to the gracious dining room, with walls covered in a classic French floral fabric--suggesting the feeling of dining in a garden. The handsome library offers a cozy and more intimate space for entertaining with colorful red glazed wood paneled walls and built-in bookcases flanking another wood-burning fireplace with marble mantel.

The large, windowed, eat-in chef's kitchen features a sizeable island and breakfast area with a roomy corner banquette for informal dining. Top-of the-line appliances include: a Sub-Zero refrigerator, Viking range with grill and double ovens, Miele dishwasher and a wine cooler. Off the kitchen is an office/playroom and staff hall with a maid's room with a full bath. Beyond is laundry area with washer/dryer and utility sink. A lovely powder room is tucked away down a short hall from the entry gallery.

The private bedroom wing is perfectly separated from the public rooms by a classically designed hallway lined with custom bookshelves. The corner primary bedroom with its ensuite marble bath and dressing area is spacious and bright with views of the river and charming Sutton Square. The additional two bedrooms are large and sunny and feature ensuite, windowed marble baths.

Beautiful herringbone hardwood floors, mahogany paneled doors, original brass hardware, broad baseboards, generous built-ins and walk-in closets abound throughout this impeccably renovated apartment. There is central air and a customized sound system plus a basement storage room.

25 Sutton Place is an elegant full-service pre-war co-op built in 1927 with only 13 apartments on 15 floors. Residents enjoy white glove service and amenities including a full-time doorman and live-in resident manager. Sutton Place | Manhattan

Quick Profile

Sutton Place is usually described with favorable words like charming, cozy, great neighborhood, hidden gem, sanctuary, or even small village inside a big city. Those descriptions aren’t from real estate folks either, they’re from the people that live and work there, so it must be true.

The quiet and upscale neighborhood is more like an enclave. It’s bounded by East 53rd Street to the south, East 59th Street to the North, First Avenue to the west, and the East River to the east. Most residents will tell you that everything you’ll ever need is located in the neighborhood. When it’s time to venture out into the cityscape, Sutton Place is within easy reach to Midtown and cultural attractions like the Museum of Modern Art, Rockefeller Center, Central Park and other iconic sites.

Manhattan has always had notable celebrity residents. But for unknown reasons, Sutton Place has had more than its share of superstars over the years. Some of the more iconic celebs include: Marilyn Monroe and Arthur Miller, Freddie Mercury, Sigourney Weaver, Joan Crawford, Michael Jackson and sister Latoya (Just for one summer).

Sutton Place is named after Effingham B. Sutton, a shipping merchant and entrepreneur. After hitting it big in the California gold rush, Sutton built brownstones along East 57th and East 58th streets with aspirations of making the section more residential. Poverty and crime dashed his dreams. The street gangs that hung out along the dead-ends and cul-de-sacs added to the neighborhood’s decay. Sutton was about to give up on his development endeavors but the Vanderbilt’s and the Morgan’s showed up in the 1920s and transformed the neighborhood. It soon became a wealthy enclave.
