Property Description for 58 Downing Street

***Great investment opportunity or value purchase for end user. Renovated, turn-key single family townhouse in West Village.*** Welcome to 58 Downing Street - a unique townhouse with a bohemian chic country cottage feel carefully renovated with modern upgrades to meet today’s buyer. A rare opportunity to own a home that outcharms the neighborhood. 58 Downing is a turn of the century West Village single family home with over 2600sf of interior living space spread out over four floors and a private garden. Built in 1899, this 3BR/3BA townhome exudes charm and a special character with four wood burning fireplaces, exposed brick, original wood ceiling beams and paneling, and reclaimed hardwood floors. The coziness and historical charm of the home is counterbalanced with a careful renovation bringing in a chef’s kitchen with top of the line appliances, central air conditioning, radiant heat floors in baths, built-in Sonos and Nest systems throughout. All while being perfectly located in one of New York City’s most desirable and charming neighborhoods, the West Village. Upon entry to the parlor level, you are met with an arcade of arched doorways opening into a gracious and intimate layout of perfect entertaining spaces. Offering flexibility of uses, the front and rear parlors feature 10ft ceilings, hand-scraped walnut floors, crown moulding, and each have wood burning fireplaces with antique wooden mantels. Both rooms have a special glow with the open concept allowing both north and south light – the front parlor overlooks Downing Street to the north and the rear parlor opens to the rear garden to the south with a 7ft tall in-swing window. One floor above is an extraordinary floor-though primary bedroom suite finished with crown moulding and continued gorgeous reclaimed walnut floors. Sunbathed through two North-facing windows and treeline views, the primary bedroom easily accommodates a king-sized bed and has matching built-ins framed around the third wood burning fireplace. Between the primary bedroom and bath, there is a large dressing room with custom built floor to ceiling closets offering ample storage. The windowed primary bathroom has a walk-in spa shower and is finished in a handsome classic look: with a perfectly aged freestanding marble vanity, patinated copper finishes, and vintage floor tiles concealing radiant heat floors. Also on the primary suite floor is a laundry room with a vented washer/dryer. The top floor has two additional bedrooms and is bathed in sunlight from both north and south exposures featuring open sky views as well as three skylights. Original details such as the exposed brick and the beamed ceiling are perfectly balanced with custom built-ins and closets finished in a chic hale navy, wide plank oak floors, and a wet bar with refrigerator. Currently configured with a flexible layout, the third floor could function just as well as a den/media room with guest room or home office. The English basement features a chic farmhouse style eat-in kitchen with beamed ceiling and an exposed brick wall with built-in wood burning fireplace all rounded out with custom bead board cabinets topped off with soft white marble counter-tops. While timeless in it’s aesthetic, the kitchen has been expertly renovated to meet chef’s standards with a breakfast bar/island, Viking and Subzero stainless steel appliances, built-in wine refrigerator. The third full bath is also located on this floor as well as a rear sitting area which can serve as additional dining off of the eat-in kitchen. To top it all off, there is a private yard offering a fantastic space for entertaining, to plant a garden, or to relax and enjoy a bit of quiet outdoor solitude in one of Manhattan’s most desirable neighborhoods.

Greenwich Village | Manhattan

Quick Profile

Birthplace of beatniks, Greenwich Village has always been a neighborhood bursting with creativity, home to artists, poets, musicians and writers. There is a lot of foot traffic in the neighborhood, as it gives convenient access to many other neighborhoods. There are a lot of popular eateries on MacDougal Street and bars on Bleecker Street. The neighborhood has a bit of a college-town feel, due to the presence of NYU. There aren’t large chain stores here, so it isn’t really a mecca for shopaholics, but you can find interesting vintage stores and specialty boutiques.

Available housing is centered on pre-war walk-ups. You can find good deals on the quieter, tree-lined side streets, as opposed to the bustling avenues. There are pockets of brownstones and townhouses, some dating back to the early 19th century, throughout the neighborhood, as well. You will find more luxurious housing in the newer high-rise buildings on Park and Fifth Avenues.

Washington Square Park is the heart of the neighborhood. If you sit near the Arch and close your eyes, you might catch an echo of the music and social history of the Park, floating through the air. Greats like Joan Baez, Bob Dylan, and Paul Simon started their storied careers right here in Greenwich Village. Today, the Village is a celebration of diversity, where everyone is welcome.
