Property Description for 168 Bergen Street, TOWNHOUSE

168 Bergen Street is beautifully appointed and intentionally designed & configured as an optimal single family residence. On a tree lined Boerum Hill block in a row of homogenous brownstones, this home was built between 1856 and 1861 by William Alexander and James Hughes.

The townhouse is set back allowing for an ornate iron fence and a wide stoop entry to the parlor. French doors with headlights and a bracketed temple form invite you to the living room, fully equipped kitchen, dining room, large coat closet and elusive powder room. Two large custom glass doors open from the back parlor to the deck (suitable for al fresco dining) which is connected to the lush garden with a steel staircase.

On the garden floor you have a glass sliding wall that opens fully for a seamless entertaining and gathering space. The front garden floor houses a guest bedroom and full bathroom as well as additional closet space. The basement/cellar level is designed as a game room and gym with a large laundry room and a wine cellar.

The bedroom floors are on the top two floors. The primary suite is the full third floor with a bedroom large enough for a king size bed, night stands, dressing room and two walls of custom closets. Because of the generous townhouse width (22 foot) there is space for the separate home office with built in desk and shelving. The jewel of this floor however is the oversized bathroom with storage closet, double sinks, freestanding tub and a spacious glass and stone shower.

The top floor has an open landing suitable as a playroom or study and has three bedrooms and two full baths, one of which has two sinks and the other is en suite.

The skylight brings light into the center of the house while the curved staircase although modern pays homage to the classic brownstone. The handsome and stately home is truly a rare find.

All showings are by private appointment.

Boerum Hill | Brooklyn

Quick Profile

Boerum Hill is a tiny, quiet, primarily residential neighborhood in Brooklyn. There are broad tree-lined streets that are filled with elegant three and four-story brownstones and townhouses, mostly built between 1840 and 1870. There is a definite family vibe to the neighborhood, but young professionals are moving in, and with them are coming trendy bars to cater to their desire for some measure of nightlife, without having to linger in Manhattan. These new bars and restaurants are being sandwiched in amongst existing shops on both Atlantic Avenue and Smith Street, which are the main commercial areas in Boerum Hill.

Boerum Hill offers a convenient location that is still able to maintain its small-neighborhood feel. Shopkeepers value their customers and remember their regulars. It continues to do what it was designed to do, namely provide small-town living in the very shadow of the big city. Boerum Hill is an easy commute to other parts of the city, making it easy to come home every day to the peace and tranquility of Boerum Hill while commuting to a job anywhere in the city.

The neighborhood is quite walkable and you can take the time to catch up with your neighbors while visiting on their stoops. Shopping on Atlantic Avenue is stress-free with no high pressure. You can meet with friends at any of the many coffee shops and while away pleasant hours in conversation. The dining scene on Smith Street is similarly laid-back. Don’t expect that there will be quite as much to see or do as there is in Manhattan, but there are a decent number of interesting bars and restaurants providing a measure of nightlife. The trade-off is worth it, as Boerum Hill provides a quiet, peaceful place to live and raise a family.
