Property Description for 177 Ninth Ave, 2-A

Rare opportunity to own an expansive home built on the grounds of the General Theological Seminary - a historic landmark built in 1817 known for its beautiful gardens, neo gothic architecture and notably as the location where Clement Clarke Moore wrote his famous poem “A visit from St Nicholas” aka "Twas the Night Before Christmas.” This classic pre-war inspired four bedroom layout wraps the entire western edge of Chelsea Enclave offering South, West and North exposures - creating a one of a kind sanctuary in the heart of New York City. Enter through the grand windowed foyer that leads into the separate kitchen with breakfast room, 133 SF private terrace, dining area and living area, which all offer views of The Close, an expansive lawn reminiscent of a European garden full of century old trees.  The Alan Wanzenberg custom designed kitchen features black absolute granite countertops, white oak cabinetry, Bosch dishwasher, 36” Wolf oven with a Miele stainless steel fully vented hood, Sub-Zero 36” refrigerator and Sub-Zero stainless steel 46-bottle wine cooler with dual temperature control. The living and dining area boast 9’2 ceilings with floor to ceiling glass facing North and West. All four bedrooms face South with en-suite marble baths. The primary bedroom enjoys its own foyer, a corner nook with floor to ceiling windows, and an ensuite bathroom with Botticino Fiorio marble, radiant heated floor, and a Kohler Tea-for-Two bath.  The Enclave is truly a unique building, operating as a condop (a coop with condominium rules). The owners benefit from exclusive amenities, including direct access to a secluded, block-long, European-style secret garden that connects the gothic buildings of Chelsea’s General Theological Seminary and the Enclave, a 24-hour doorman, attached garage, live-in resident manager, fitness center, childrens playroom, valet package room, bike room, and a manicured roof deck.

Chelsea | Manhattan

Quick Profile

The row houses portray the world-class architecture of Greek Revival, Italianate and Georgian styles. The population is both ethnically and socially diverse, which is reflected in the restaurants and retail businesses in the neighborhood.

Western Chelsea is the center of the NYC art world, where you will find more than 200 art galleries housed in rehabbed factories and warehouses, as well as in newly-constructed buildings.

While people of many different cultures call Chelsea home, it has been a mecca over the years for people in the LGBTQ community. One census reported that as many as 22% of its residents were gay couples. Eighth Avenue is a trendy area for LGBTQ-oriented dining and shopping. Although it no longer draws the LGBTQ population that it once did, Chelsea still has many popular alternative bars.

Chelsea is primarily residential, consisting of a mixture of diverse complexes, low-rise apartment blocks, tenements, townhouses, renovated row houses, and luxury high-rises.

Chelsea is an interesting and sought-after place to live, with unique clothing boutiques, restaurants, and delis representing cultures from around the world. In addition to its quirky establishments, Chelsea has fine dining restaurants and a vibrant, hip nightlife, which adds to its allure.

Chelsea is well-served by public transportation. At least six city bus routes traverse Chelsea. There are three NYC subway routes with stops on Seventh Avenue, three on Eighth Avenue, and two more on Sixth Avenue. The 34th Street - Hudson Yards Station opened in 2015 with its main entrance in Chelsea.
