Property Description for 435 East 52nd Street, 18/19-C

High atop the magnificent River House in Manhattan, one will find an unparalleled duplex residence of 17 rooms, many of which offer sweeping views across the East River. With interiors by Michel S. Smith, the duplex features a chef's kitchen, library, great room, formal dining room, a sun room with south facing terraces and a large primary bedroom-suite with a sitting room and shimmering views of the East River. Many of the 49 windows within the duplex feature majestic scenes to the north and south as well as east of the apartment. At each hour of the day, sunrise to sunset, extraordinary light bathes the interior of this residence. In addition to the striking panorama experienced in the large high ceilinged living room, there are beautiful daytime and nighttime sights from the grand dining room. In addition to the duplex's first floor public rooms, there is also a charming south facing library, a garden room which leads to the terraces, a den, chef's kitchen, and a generously sized pantry adjacent to two staff rooms.

Ascend a most elegant staircase to find one of New York's most beautiful principle bedrooms. It is the most magnificent perch from which to greet today. The primary bedroom suite, which includes the beautifully appointed his and hers bathes, and dressing rooms, is extremely generous in size.

In addition to the principal bedroom suite, there is a second floor kitchen and five bedrooms, all have an en suite baths.

River House was designed by architects Bottomley, Wagner & White and built in 1931 by James Stewart. Beekman Place | Manhattan

Quick Profile

Beekman Place is less of a neighborhood than it is a quiet two-block enclave just north of the United Nations on the far eastern edge of Turtle Bay. There is only one street that runs through the neighborhood, also called Beekman Place, that wraps itself around 49th Street and 51st Street.

This bucolic little stretch of the east side has always been a cherished spot for those fortunate enough to have found refuge here. The noise and the street traffic from the city surrounds is virtually non-existent as there are no through streets in this neighborhood.

The neighborhood composition largely consists of a few clusters of townhouses and prewar co-ops. The exception to the rule is the charming art-deco-styled Beekman Place Hotel at the corner of First Avenue and 49th Street and the two post-war towers, 860 and 870 UN Plaza that front the grounds of the United Nations.
