Property Description for 201 Bergen Street

Lovingly renovated throughout, this gem of a home offers four bedrooms and 2.5 baths, along with a delightful sunroom and a stunning back garden. Currently used as a single-family home (although it remains a legal two-family and could easily be converted back), the first floor features a kitchen, dining area, living room, and sunroom. A charming under-the-stoop entrance welcomes you with coat hooks and storage. The front of the house is bathed in southern light in the afternoon, while morning light floods the space through a wall of glass doors that open to the beautifully landscaped garden at the back. The living and dining areas are spacious, with the custom kitchen serving as the centerpiece of the space.

The kitchen is truly fit for a chef, boasting professional-grade appliances including a Wolf range, Liebherr fridge, Sub-Zero freezer, Miele dishwasher, Uline wine fridge, Kitchen Aid wall oven, concrete counters, and ample custom solid wood cabinetry. Adjacent to the kitchen is a charming powder room and a delightful sunroom with exposed brick walls and floor-to-ceiling glass doors that lead to the gorgeous garden, making it the perfect spot for morning coffee and reading the paper. The garden is a private oasis, measuring 850 square feet and featuring a stone patio, gardening areas, and space for relaxation and al fresco dining.

The quintessential parlor floor is adorned with high ceilings, crown moldings, and period details that make Brownstones so beloved. The front room, currently used as a family room, is beautifully proportioned with large south-facing windows, built-in shelving, and hardwood floors. The serene and spacious primary bedroom has deep closet and glass doors that open to a lovely deck overlooking the garden below. The large windowed bathroom on this floor features a deep soaking tub, a generous vanity, and classic finishes and fixtures.

The top floor, illuminated by large skylights, features two substantial bedrooms, a full bath, a large walk-in closet (which could easily be converted into a home office or small bedroom), and a stacked washer and dryer. Each bedroom on this floor boasts an attractive fireplace mantel, adding to the charm of the space. Throughout the house, you'll find gorgeous wide-plank hardwood pine floors, central air conditioning, and a wired sound system.

The cellar is large, dry, and offers ample storage space. The house was completely renovated in 2012 by award-winning architect Deborah Gans of GanStudio, with all new mechanicals and a new roof added in 2022.

Located on a lovely tree-lined street in the heart of Boerum Hill, just two blocks from Cobble Hill and three blocks from the great shopping and dining on Atlantic Avenue, and within close proximity to Brooklyn Heights, Downtown Brooklyn, Park Slope, and multiple subway lines, the location is truly unbeatable, surrounded by the best of Brooklyn in every direction!

Boerum Hill | Brooklyn

Quick Profile

Boerum Hill is a tiny, quiet, primarily residential neighborhood in Brooklyn. There are broad tree-lined streets that are filled with elegant three and four-story brownstones and townhouses, mostly built between 1840 and 1870. There is a definite family vibe to the neighborhood, but young professionals are moving in, and with them are coming trendy bars to cater to their desire for some measure of nightlife, without having to linger in Manhattan. These new bars and restaurants are being sandwiched in amongst existing shops on both Atlantic Avenue and Smith Street, which are the main commercial areas in Boerum Hill.

Boerum Hill offers a convenient location that is still able to maintain its small-neighborhood feel. Shopkeepers value their customers and remember their regulars. It continues to do what it was designed to do, namely provide small-town living in the very shadow of the big city. Boerum Hill is an easy commute to other parts of the city, making it easy to come home every day to the peace and tranquility of Boerum Hill while commuting to a job anywhere in the city.

The neighborhood is quite walkable and you can take the time to catch up with your neighbors while visiting on their stoops. Shopping on Atlantic Avenue is stress-free with no high pressure. You can meet with friends at any of the many coffee shops and while away pleasant hours in conversation. The dining scene on Smith Street is similarly laid-back. Don’t expect that there will be quite as much to see or do as there is in Manhattan, but there are a decent number of interesting bars and restaurants providing a measure of nightlife. The trade-off is worth it, as Boerum Hill provides a quiet, peaceful place to live and raise a family.
