Property Description for 400 Lafayette Ave

Welcome to 400 Lafayette Avenue, a magnificent, architect owned and restored three-family, four-story brownstone on the cusp of Clinton Hill and Bedford-Stuyvesant. Meticulously maintained and renovated over the last 18 years, this impeccable home presents an unparalleled mix of modern upgrades and original details and is situated on a 20'x101' lot with over 4,000 square feet livable space. A stylish and stunning owner’s triplex spans the sprawling garden and parlor levels and includes a fully renovated basement with additional recreational space. Two income-producing large 1BR rentals occupy the top two floors of the building and each unit in this majestic home has been renovated with an incredible attention to detail. The owner’s triplex is graced with 11’ ceilings on the parlor level, decorative carved marble mantels, original plaster moldings, and oversized windows with northern and southern exposures. Original pocket doors with lace-like etched glass separate the sunny kitchen from the spacious living and dining rooms. The expansive kitchen features a center, waterfall style quartz island, a marble mantel, all stainless steel appliances, custom cabinetry and access to a lush, south-facing garden through doors leading to a spiral stair case. A full bathroom with a claw foot tub, Urban Archeology pedestal sink and crystal chandelier adds a delightful touch of whimsy and is a peaceful retreat with garden views. Three generously sized bedrooms, one of which is currently being used as a home office with room for two workstations, and another full bathroom are situated on the garden level. Two of the bedrooms boast walk in closets while the bathroom features double sinks and large shower with glass enclosure, and there is access to the garden from this level as well. The triplex offers spilt system air conditioning in each room including the basement. The south-facing owner's garden has been tended to over 18 years and is a true oasis featuring a mature Japanese red maple, lilacs, rhododendrons, hydrangeas, a southern magnolia and many more decorative shrubs. Lavender phlox, creeping Jenny, purple coral bells, hostas, daylilies, as well as many tulips, daffodils and hyacinths provide pops of color and foliage all year round. Upon entering 400 Lafayette Avenue, you’ll discover a gorgeous pier mirror and original set of arched doors with etched glass in the entryway. Two renovated and completely turn-key large 1BR rentals are situated on the top two floors and together they provide the same mix of original details and modern upgrades as the owner’s unit with marble mantels, plaster moldings, many closets, wood flooring and renovated kitchens with stone counters and all stainless steel appliances. Bright and sunny, both apartments have northern and southern exposures and have always attracted a large pool of renters. 400 Lafayette Avenue is conveniently located two blocks from Pratt Institute and offers easy access to the vibrant dining and shopping scene in Clinton Hill and Bed-Stuy, including Choice Market, Vini & Olii, Speedy Romeo, Clementine’s, Place des Fetes, Izzy Rose, Mekelburg's, Peaches, and more, and there's a Food Emporium nearby. Access to transportation is also effortless with the G and B38 limited bus at Classon Avenue around the corner. Rarely does a home this special come along! Bedford Stuyvesant | Brooklyn

Quick Profile

Known for its historic brownstones and tight-knit enclave, Bed-Stuy has increasingly left behind its early reputation for being a “bedroom community” and transcended into a highly desirable neighborhood.

Distinct for its aesthetic, it is populated with ornate buildings characterized by cornices, friezes, finials, fluting and other marks of classic architecture. Built up during the period from 1870 to 1900, its historic district runs to the north of Jefferson Avenue, to the east of Malcolm X Boulevard and to the west of Tompkins Avenue.

At one point known as “Brooklyn’s Little Harlem,” the shape of the area has shifted toward attracting a wider demographic of people thanks to the influx of bars, restaurants, antique furniture stores and vintage boutiques. More police enforcement paired with the decline of the crack epidemic at the beginning of the 2000s also opened the door for increased development, as well as the occupation of formerly abandoned buildings and spaces.
